Garage manager Alvin "Nip' Knipfer, devoted family man

Alvin "Nip" Knipfer raised six children in the Burlington home he lived in for 40 years.

He would have lived there longer - were it not for Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport.

"We had to sell because of the airport, " said his wife of 53 years, Marie Finan Knipfer. "We didn't have any choice about it."

Mr. Knipfer died Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood, just about a year after he and his wife found a new home in Florence.

He was 75.

Mr. Knipfer was born and raised in Covington. He enlisted in the Army in the early 1940s, and was stationed in Czechoslovakia, Austria and France during World War II.

When he returned from the war in 1945, he got a job with the Carew Tower Garage in Cincinnati, where he eventually retired as manager in the late 1980s.

He married his wife in 1944, and they moved to Burlington several years later to raise their children.

"His brother had just bought a home in Burlington, and the house next door was for sale, " Mrs. Knipfer said.

In between taking his children fishing, hunting and to their Little League games, Mr. Knipfer was a member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church in Burlington and participated in the church's Boondockers Club, which held fund-raisers to benefit poor children.

He also was a member of the Knights of Columbus Richard Ackerman Council.

"He was a very kind and generous man, " Mrs. Knipfer said. "He didn't have a mean bone in his body."

As his children grew older and had their own children, Mr. Knipfer used his wood-working skills to make a series of toy boxes - one for each of his eight grandchildren.

"They all still have them, " Mrs. Knipfer said. "He made one, then the kids liked them so much, he made another."

Despite failing eyesight, he completed his last toy box at the age of 65.
