Lucille Stewart, founded golf tourney
Lucille J. Stewart didn't have any relatives with cerebral palsy.
Yet, she proudly served as president of the Cerebral Palsy Women's Guild and was chairwoman of its largest fund-raiser, the Cerebral Palsy Cotton Ball. She also supported symphonic music as a booster and volunteer.
"She had friends associated with (those organizations), and she had a lot of energy and would do anything to help anybody, " said Mrs. Stewart's step-granddaughter, Ann White. "People would ask her for her help, and she'd end up chairing it."
Mrs. Stewart died at 11:50 a.m. Wednesday at Carmel Manor Nursing Home in Ft. Thomas. She was 91.
She grew up in Cincinnati and went to Hughes High School. After she graduated in 1925, she and a friend opened a beauty shop in downtown Cincinnati, where she worked for about six years.
In 1929, she married
her first husband, Les Deglow, a prominent architect who de signed the Beverly Hills Supper Club and the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport.
They moved to Latonia, where she was a homemaker. "She went everywhere with Les, " said Mrs. White, of Ft. Thomas. "They used to take the Riley to Chicago on business and pleasure."
Mr. Deglow died of a massive heart attack in 1947, two days before the airport was dedicated.
Mrs. Stewart later married
Gregory Stewart, who eventually retired as chairman of the board of the Glenny Glass Co. in Cincinnati. She immediately inherited several step-children and step-grandchildren.
The couple moved to Riverside Parkway in Ft. Thomas, and Mrs. Stewart became very involved in social and civic groups. She also was an active member of the Covington Opti-Mrs. Club and served as president of the Northern Kentucky Women's Amateur Golf Association. She started the Women's Highlander, a golf tournament for women.
After Mr. Stewart died in 1970, Mrs. Stewart continued her involvement. After she fell and broke her shoulder in 1989, she moved into Carmel Manor Nursing Home. She liked it there, Mrs. White said, because she had a view of the river, just as she did from her Ft. Thomas home.
"She truly believed what is given in life is returned, " Mrs. White said. "She was in her element when she was entertaining family and friends or serving the community in some capacity."
