Chemist Carlos Cole, loved family, yard work
His yard may have been small, but Carlos James Cole kept it manicured.
"He loved to fuddle around with trees, bushes and flowers, " said his wife, Jane Prindle Cole. "It's small, but he kept it full."
One of Mr. Cole's favorite pastimes was working in the yard, which he did until he was well into his 70s.
The Dayton resident died at 3:15 p.m. Sunday at St. Luke Hospital in Ft. Thomas. He was 75.
Mr. Cole was born in Athens, Ala. He was a teen-ager when he moved with his mother and three sisters to Kentucky in 1939.
He worked at a hamburger stand in Newport until he went into the Army and was stationed in the Pacific Islands during World War II.
When he returned, he got a job at Newport Steel in 1947. He retired as a chemist after 37 years.
He married
Mrs. Cole in 1948. They lived in Newport for several years before moving to Dayton, where they raised their five children.
When he wasn't working at the steel factory, he loved to read and work in the yard.
"He was a very good man, very sweet, " Mrs. Cole said. "We've had a good life together."
Other survivors include daughters, Colette Cole-Saner of Newport, Anita Buechel of Charlotte, N.C., Patti Cole of Livermore, Calif., and Judy Cole of Dayton; a son, Jim Cole of California, Ky.; sisters, Hazel Clifford of Bellevue and Robbie Lehmann of Cincinnati; and eight grandchildren.
Services will be at noon Wednesday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Bellevue. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Ft. Thomas.

Myrtle Allen, 92, of Warsaw, died Sunday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. She was a retired X-ray worker. Her husband, Robert Allen, died in 1973.
Survivors include a daughter, Betty Martin of Elsmere; three grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Carlton-Lowder Funeral Home, Warsaw. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Warsaw Cemetery.
Juanita Ruth Costello, 68, of Burlington, died Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband, Stewart Costello of Burlington; sons, Dan Bryson of Cincinnati, Rick Bryson of Hebron, Randy Bryson of Florence and Greg Whitlay of Covington; sisters, Louise Bechtol of Cincinnati, Betty Field of Alexandria and Connie Smith of Independence; and 10 grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Burlington. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger.

Laban Faulconer, 87, of Ft. Wright, died at 10:35 p.m. Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

Esther "Tessie" Gilcher, 95, of Covington, died Monday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit in Covington.
Arrangements are pending at Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Latonia.
Robyn Hanrahan, 40, of Independence, died Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was a switch technician with Cincinnati Bell Telephone and a volunteer with the Shelter for Battered Women.
Survivors include her husband, Daniel Hanrahan; a daughter, Amber Hanrahan of Independence; her parents, Gayle and Betty Duncan of Walton; and sisters, Susan Cooper of Taylor Mill and Amber Duncan of Walton.
Services will be at the convenience of the family. Don Catchen and Son Funeral Home, Elsmere, is handling arrangements.
Ruby Hays, 75, of Falmouth, died Monday at the home of her sister in Pendleton County. Arrangements are pending at Peoples Funeral Home, Falmouth.
Michael W. Hull, 41, of Covington, died Sunday at Mercy Hospital, Cincinnati.

Edna Michels, 80, of Covington, died at 8:30 p.m. Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North in Covington. She was a retired housekeeper with St. John Nursing Home, Covington.
Survivors include a son, John Michels of Covington; and a sister, Ann Averdick of Ft. Wright.
Graveside services will be at noon Wednesday at St. John Cemetery, Ft. Mitchell. Don Catchen and Son Funeral Home, Covington, is handling arrangements.
M. H. "Jack" Morgan, 89, of Naples, Fla., formerly of Northern Kentucky, died Friday at Heritage Health Care Center in Naples. He was a retired sales manager and a member of Naples Presbyterian Church. He also was a Mason and a Shriner.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Morgan; and sons, Jack B. Morgan of Mt. Dora, Fla., and Thomas O. Morgan of Cedartown, Ga.

LaWanda June Ogden, 69, of Latonia, died at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at her home. She was a former antiques dealer with Columbia Antiques, Cincinnati, and a member of Holy Cross Church, Latonia. Her husband, Ervin Gerald Ogden, died in 1995.
Survivors include a daughter, Dolores Trusty of Latonia; sisters, Betty Morgan of Indianapolis and Irma Wernsing of Covington; three grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Visitation will be from 10 to 10:45 a.m. Wednesday at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia. Ruth Smiley, 72, of Georgetown, died Saturday at Georgetown Extended Care Center. She was a homemaker and a member of Berry United Methodist Church, Harrison County.

Barnes of Georgetown; sisters, Eloise Cason and Gladys Whalen, both of Cynthiana, and Betty Southerland of Lexington; brothers, James Price, Jack Price and George Price, all of Cynthiana; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Lawrence William Winkle, 37, of Morning View, died Sunday at his home. He was a farmer and a member of Butler Baptist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Amanda Nicole Winkle of Burlington; his mother, Beulah Winkle of Ft. Mitchell; brothers, Richard Winkle of Ft. Mitchell, Donnie Winkle of Butler and Samuel Winkle of Florence; and a sister, Sandra Sizemore of Butler.
