Ft. Wright's Thomas Covington, gave generously to poor; loved ham radio
Thomas L. Covington of Ft. Wright gave almost everything he had to charity.
Mr. Covington, 81, died at 7:57 a.m. Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence.
He was a retired engineer for Cincinnati Bell and a member of First Presbyterian Church in Covington, where he served as a deacon, an elder and clerk of session with the church.
"He was very religious, " said a daughter, Diana Doll of Union. "He gave to numerous charities. He gave a lot of money to his church. And he gave money to poor people for shoes or coats at the soup kitchen. He gave everything he had."
Mr. Covington was a member of Telephone Pioneers of America and the Toastmaster Club. He was an amateur radio operator and a soup kitchen volunteer.
Mr. Covington began tinkering with ham radio as a youngster. He developed an interest in communications that led to his work at Cincinnati Bell, his daughter said.
"He did ham radio until he got ill, " Mrs. Doll said. "He talked to people all over the world."
Other survivors include his wife, Ruth Kampsen Covington; daughters, Carolyn Whelen of New Fairfield, Conn., Nancy Covington of Ft. Mitchell, Joyce Steffen of Florence, Marlene Lyons of Dry Ridge, Lee Ann Gamm of Owenton and Janice Jaber of Cold Spring; a sister, Irene Kaldy of Katy, Texas; 22 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the church. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Entombment will be in St. Mary Mausoleum, Ft. Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to the church, 1400 Highland Ave., Covington, Ky. 41011.
Goldie Morris Barrett, 92, of Georgetown, formerly of Pendleton County, died Monday at her home. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include daughters, Margie Woolums of Naples, Fla., and Darlene Greene of Georgetown; a brother, Clark Thomas of Butler; seven grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
Services were this morning at Johnson Funeral Home, Georgetown. Burial was in Mt. Auburn Cemetery, Pendleton County. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of the Bluegrass, 208 Steele St., Frankfort, Ky. 40601-2744.
Laban M. Faulconer, 87, of Ft. Wright, died at 10:35 p.m. Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a retired conductor with Southern Railroad and a member of First Baptist Church, Ludlow. He was a deacon, a greeter and a past recording secretary with the church. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Coakley Faulconer.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the church. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger. Memorials are suggested to the church building fund, 400 Linden St., Ludlow, Ky. 41016.
Esther "Tessie" Gilcher, 95, of Covington, died at 4:30 a.m. Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North Hospice, Covington. She was a retired supervisor for Inter-Ocean Insurance company.
Survivors include a niece and several nephews.
Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Vine Street Hill Cemetery, Cincinnati. Memorialsa are suggested to Esther M. Gilcher Memorial Fund, c/o Sharon Naugle, 3522 Glenn Ave., Covington 41015. Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Latonia, is handling arrangements.
Anna Mae Graue, 87, of Covington, died at 7:45 a.m. Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Augustine Church Pathfinders. Her husband, Frank A. Graue, died in 1977. A son, Franz "Butch" Graue, died in 1996.
Survivors include a daughter, Martha Thornton of Erlanger; a brother, Carl Bishop of Ft. Wright; a sister, Catherine Menmuir of Dunsborough of West Australia; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Augustine Church, Covington. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Ft. Wright. Memorials are suggested to American Cancer Society, 7730 U. S. 42, Suite C6, Florence, Ky. 41042, or the charity of the donor's choice.
Ruby Lee Browning Hays, 75, of Falmouth, died Monday. She was a homemaker and a member of Antioch Christian Church, Pendleton County. Her husband, James Arwood Hays, died in 1986.
Survivors include sons, Mike Hays of Berry, Bobby Wayne Hays of Norwood, Ohio, and Butch Hays of Walton; sisters, Fern Workman of Dry Ridge, Pearlie Wright and Ramona Buckley, both of Falmouth, and Patricia Colvin of Butler; brothers, Bill Browning of Ft. Thomas and Tommy Browning of Butler; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Peoples Funeral Home, Falmouth. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, Falmouth.
Mary Lou Hedgecock, 79, of Berlin, died Saturday at her son's home in Highlands Ranch, Colo. She was owner of Hedgecock Grocery Store in Berlin and a member of Willow Baptist Church, Bracken County. Her husband, Morford Hedgecock, died in 1990.
Survivors include a son, Gilmore Hedgecock of Highlands Ranch; and one grandchild.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Metcalfe-Hennessey Funeral Home, Augusta. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Hedgecock Cemetery, Bracken County. Memorials are suggested to the church, the cemetery fund, or the American Cancer Society.
Helen Hildebrant, 85, of Ludlow, died Monday at Baptist Convalescent Center, Newport.

Michael W. Hull, 41, of Covington, died at 9 a.m. Sunday at Mercy Hospital in Fairfield, Ohio. He was an employee of Coca Cola Co., Cincinnati.
Survivors include his mother, Elizabeth Fauvell of Covington.

Regina Myers, 67, of Covington, died at 6:04 p.m. Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North in Covington. She was a homemaker and a member of Garrard Street Church of Christ, Covington.
Survivors include a son, General Clark III of Atlanta; daughters, Judy Silverstein of Massachusetts and Sandy Ashcraft of Covington; a sister, Janet C. Hunzicker of Covington; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Effie Lee Neal, 60, of Walton, died Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. She was a homemaker and a member of Shiloh Baptist Church.
Survivors include daughters, Patty Hisle of Lexington and Linda Michael of Corinth; sons, Gene Neal of Dry Ridge, and Ricky Neal and Terry Neal, both of Corinth; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Robert Nicholas Nehus, 61, of Cold Spring, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a warehouseman with Procter & Gamble Co., Cincinnati, and a member of Catholic Order of Foresters St. Joseph Court, Camp Springs.
Survivors include his wife, Jean Schalk Nehus; daughters, Joyce House of Bartlett, Tenn., and Sharon Nehus of Alexandria; sons, Randy Nehus of Alexandria and Jeff Nehus of Ft. Thomas; sisters, Mary Ann Studer of Melbourne, Helen Wendling and Rose Bacon, both of Highland Heights, Barb Enzweiler of Alexandria and Kay Sendelbach of Cold Spring; brothers, Henry Nehus and John Nehus, both of Alexandria, and Bill Nehus of Elsmere; and 11 grandchildren.

Fred Pfeiffer, 77, of Erlanger, died Tuesday at University Hospital, Cincinnati.

Jane Ellen Phethean, 48, of Ft. Thomas, died at 10 a.m. Monday at her home.
She was a teacher with Dater Junior High School in Cincinnati.
Survivors include her father and stepmother, Norman Phethean of Lakeland, Fla., and Caroline Bohn Phethean of Cincinnati; sisters, Joanne Fulford of Lakeland, Fla. and Sarah Dailey of Lakeside Park; and brothers, Lanning Phethean of Lakeland, Fla., Newell Phethean of Berea and Steele Phethean of Chattanooga, Tenn.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Ft. Thomas. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mildred Piper, 85, of Covington, died Tuesday at St. Charles Care Center, Covington.

Gilbert C. Rex, 78, of Latonia, died at 6:30 a.m. Tuesday at Ro sedale Manor in Latonia. He was a retired assistant chief train dispatcher with L&N; Railroad, and was a member of Hickory Grove Baptist Church, Independence.
He also was a member of American Train Dispatcher's Association. His wife, Goldie Sturgeon Rex, died in 1981.
Survivors include sons, Mike Rex of Taylor Mill and Daryl Rex of Columbus, Ohio; daughters, Karen Parsons and Judy Rambler, both of Independence; a sister, Ernstine Mansfield of Florence; 13 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Hamilton-Stanley Funeral Home, Verona. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Thursday.
Burial will be in Pleasant View Cemetery, Dry Ridge.
