Plumber Fred Pfeiffer Jr., helped others
There wasn't anything Fred Pfeiffer Jr. couldn't fix.
When an elderly neighbor complained that a toilet in her house was leaking, Mr. Pfeiffer fixed it. When the leg on his sister's dining room table broke, he carved and attached a new one.
If a friend noticed that his water bill was particularly high, Mr. Pfeiffer inspected the house and found the leak.
"He just liked to help people out, " said his sister, Carolyn Johns of Erlanger.
"And if he fixed it for them, he wouldn't even charge them."
Mr. Pfeiffer died at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at University Hospital in Cincinnati. The Erlanger resident was 77.
Mr. Pfeiffer was a plumber for more than 50 years. He learned the trade from his father. He helped run the family business, Fred Pfeiffer and Son Plumbing, out of their Erlanger home.
"He'd work with my dad while he was in school, " Ms. Johns said. "Dad just needed help, and in those days, help was hard to find."
After his father died in 1964, Mr. Pfeiffer, a graduate of Holmes High School in Covington, took over the business.
He did plumbing work for clients, friends, family and the community for years. He installed electrical wiring and did plumbing work for the Erlanger Lion's Club, and he also did plumbing for area churches.
In 1982, he received recognition from the Lion's Club for his service.
Mr. Pfeiffer also was an administrator with the Northern Kentucky Master Plumber Association, and for more than 30 years, did the billing and book-keeping work for the association's insurance fund.
"He did everything: carpentry, woodworking, paneling, and he loved gardening, " Ms. Johns said.
