Railroad man Rueben Baker
Reuben L. Baker knew his country needed his strong back and stronger dedication during World War II.
So when Southern Railroad ran short of skilled car men, Mr. Baker began working seven days a week. For three years, he didn't miss a day.
"If there were more men like him, it would be a much better world, " said his daughter, Barbara Kingsbury, of Cooper City, Fla.
Mr. Baker 94, of Taylor Mill, died at 8:45 p.m. Wednesday at his home.
With 10 children, 24 grandchildren, 39 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren, Mr. Baker made everyone feel special with nicknames like "Highpockets, " "Pappy" and "Bulldog."
He called Mrs. Kingsbury's daughter "Jaybird" for what he said were the prettiest blue eyes in the world.
"Every minute he wasn't working he was with his family. He never had hobbies. When he was off work, he was straight home. His whole life was his family, " Mrs. Kingsbury said.
Mr. Baker was married
to Virginia Baker for 71 years.
He worked for the railroad 30 years and was formerly a farmer in Richmond.
Mr. Baker's other survivors include his sons, Roy Baker of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Ronnie Baker of Taylor Mill, James Baker of Lexington and Don Baker of Erlanger; daughters, Ella Rae Rafferty of Mankato, Kan., Gloria Mango of Springfield, Mass., Jackie Roden of Taylor Mill, Judy Baker and Alice Clemons, both of Independence; and sisters, Mary Clenney and Virginia Meredith, both of Covington.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Taylor Mill. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger.
Memorials are suggested to the Multiple Sclerosis Society, 4460 Lake Forest Drive, Cincinnati, Ohio, 45242.
Mary Carrol Hollingsworth Anness, 48, of Beaumont, Texas, formerly of Covington, died Oct. 25 at Columbia Beaumont Regional Medical Center in Beaumont. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband, Jason Hunt; a daughter, Sadie Biano of Sour Lake, Texas; sons, Marty Hollingsworth and Scott Davis, both of Covington, Jimmy Mayberry of Crittenden and Dean Hurd of Cincinnati; sisters, Shirley Mains and Doris Spicer, both of Covington; a brother, Delmer Ballard of Tampa, Fla.; and two grandchildren.
Memorial services were Oct. 25 in Beaumont. Broussard Funeral Home, Beaumont, handled arrangements.
James Cecil Claypool, 89, of Daytona Beach, Fla., formerly of Edgewood, died Tuesday at Halifax Medical Center in Florida. He was a member of Golden Rule Lodge 345 F&AM, and the Scottish Rite Indra Consistory, Covington.
Survivors include his wife, Fern Claypool; sons, James Chester Claypool and Michael Alan Claypool, both of Ft. Mitchell; a sister, Kathlene Meyers of New York City; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Baldwin-Hughey Funeral Home, New Smyrna Beach, Fla. Memorials are suggested to the Salvation Army, 530 Ballough Road, Daytona Beach, Fla., 32114.
Nancy C. Bond Fredelake, 72, of Owenton, died Wednesday at Owenton Manor nursing home. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband, Norman B. Fredelake Sr.; daughters, Patricia Lefevers of Oregon, Carol Warren of Palm Springs, Calif., Brenda Lefevers of Pineville, Kelley Hensley and Cheri Fredelake, both of Owenton; sons, Frank Bond and Charles Bond, both of Ohio, and Norman Fredelake Jr. of Owenton; sisters, Myrtle Burdette of Maryland, Shirley Neely and Marjorie Game ; 17 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Rogers Funeral Home, Owenton. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Plainview cemetery in Newtonsville, Ohio. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society, 7730 U. S. 42, Suite C6, Florence, Ky., 41042.
Paul Hellman, 67, of Florence, died at 9:35 p.m. Thursday at Florence Park Care Center. Arrangements are pending with Stith Funeral Home, Florence.
Martha Evelyn Herndon, 81, of Sparta, died Wednesday at St. Matthew Manor, Louisville. She was a homemaker and a member of Sparta Christian Church. Her first husband, Paul Reese Stewart, died in 1938. Her second husband, Raymond Daniel Herndon, died in 1968. A daughter, Mala Ruth Hill, died in 1977.
Survivors include sons, Paul W. Stewart of Louisville and Dan Herndon of Lexington; brothers, Charles Young of Sparta and George Young of Poplar Grove; and three grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Carlton-Lowder Funeral Home, Warsaw. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Burial will be in Poplar Grove Cemetery, Owen County.
Dorothy McGovern, 79, of Bellevue, died at 8:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Ft. Thomas. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Carl "Tuffy" McGovern, died in 1980.
Survivors include daughters, Carolyn Koch of Cincinnati, Patricia Kremplen of Anderson Township and Dottie Hodge of Villa Hills; eight grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Virginia Petit, 80, of Latonia, died at 8:20 p.m. Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Clayton Petit, died in 1988.
Survivors include a daughter, Nancy L. Petit of Latonia.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Latonia. Hansel W. Sullivan, 73, of Warsaw, died Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a former partner in Sullivan Trucking Co., and a member of the Gallatin County Fair Board, Warsaw Baptist Church and a past director of Kentucky Farm Bureau.
Survivors include his wife, Louise Sullivan; sons, Wayne Sullivan and Eddie Sullivan, both of Warsaw; a daughter, Judy Smith of Warsaw; a sister, Ida "Sis" Dickerson of Sanders; a brother, Lawrence Sullivan of Warsaw; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

George R. Taylor, 77, of Independence, died at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Blue Ash Nursing Home in Cincinnati. He was a retired installer with Rusk Heating and Air Conditioning Co. and an Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Catherine Brock Taylor of Inde pendence; a daughter, Marsha Bailey of Covington; and three grandchildren.

Gertrude Mary Kruse Ter ry, 84, of Bellevue, died at 12:47 a.m. Thursday at Carmel Manor nursing home, Ft. Thomas. She was a homemaker and a mem ber of the Christian Mothers of Sacred Heart Church, Bellevue.
Survivors include daughters, Patricia Neary of Highland Heights and Marianne Sallustio of Townville, Pa.; a sister, Luella Kruse of Ft. Thomas; brothers, Edward Kruse of Ft. Thomas and Jerry Kruse of Dayton; eight grandchildren and one great- grandchild.

Lelia Mae Droege-Turner, 82, of Southgate, died at 11:51 p.m. Wednesday at St. Luke Hos pital East, Ft. Thomas. She was a retired nurse's aide with the Baptist Convalescent Center, Newport.
Survivors include her hus band, Ewen Turner; a son, Billy West of Dry Ridge; a daughter, Betty Scott of Newport; step daughters, Lois Turner, Barbara Turner and Wanda Sue Wilson, all of Newport; a sister, Nola Phillips of Oneida, Tenn.; 18 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren and three great-great- grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Muehlenkamp-Er schell Funeral Home, Newport. Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Ever green Cemetery, Southgate.
Joseph Lee Vanover Jr., 2 months, the son of Joseph Sr. and Phyllis Vanover of Latonia, died at 5:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington.
Other survivors include a brother, Zachary Vanover, at home; a sister, Kimberly Vanov er, at home; grandparents, James and Anna Vanover of La tonia, and William and Leila Smith of Latonia; and great- grandparents, Robert and Mild red Creamer of Latonia.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow. Visitation will begin there at noon Monday. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Ft. Wright.
