E. L. Smith, doctor and coroner
As a physician for a half-century, Dr. E. L. Smith would often run across people who'd tell him he had delivered them.

"A man once encountered him in a store, said 'Hello doctor, don't you remember me? You delivered me 40 years ago, ' " said Dr. Smith's son, Ted.

"Dad got a kick out of that. He delivered hundreds of babies, " said Ted Smith, who lives in Park Hills.

A longtime Kenton County coroner, Dr. Smith, of Covington, died Saturday in St. Charles Care Center. He was 95.

Dr. Smith served as coroner, probably beginning in the late 1940s, and then through the 1950s, 1960s and into the early 1970s before retiring, his son said.

"The medical community prevailed upon Dad to run, to bring professionalism to the office. The previous coroner had been a barber, " said Ted Smith.

"He did his job the way it was supposed to be done. He was a wonderful man to sit down and talk with. He kind of took me under his wing, " said Don Catchen, who assisted Dr. Smith for several years.

His father was a Democrat during his time in office, and became a Republican after he retired, Ted Smith said. "One time, when the law was different, he ran in the primaries as both a Democrat and a Republican, " he said.

In addition to his general medical practice in Latonia, Dr. Smith also operated a summer resort in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. "It was in the Manistique Lake area, west of the Straits of Mackinac. "My mother, brother and I would go there early in the summer, and he would join us later. Many of our guests came from this area, and others from lower Michigan and Ohio, " Ted Smith said of the resort. It consisted of individual cabins and was known as Smith's Haven.
