Celeste Schroder, strong in faith
Celeste M. Schroder's strong faith and constant commitment to her church inspired many people.
She went to church every day, and she ministered to the elderly and the poor.
She was a volunteer secretary for Covington Bishop Richard Ackerman, and she did volunteer clerical work for the Diocese of Covington's newsletter, the Messenger.
She was one of the first in the diocese to become a Eucharistic minister.
"This lady was as close to Mother Teresa as you can get, " said Ed Moeves, whose late wife, Mary Lee Schroder Moeves, was Ms. Schroder's niece.
"She was more religious than any nun I've ever met."
Ms. Schroder died at 10:30 p.m. Monday at St. Charles Care Center in Covington. The life- long Covington resident was 91.
She was born in 1906 at the same home on Eastern Avenue in Covington where she lived all her life.
Even at a young age, religion was an important part of her life. As early as age 7, she went to church every day.
Her father died when she was young, so she had to work to help her mother support her younger sister and brother. Ms. Schroder took some business courses at Villa Madonna Academy and got a job with a Cincinnati liquor distillery.
"That was probably the reason she didn't go into the religious community, " Moeves said.
Ms. Schroder worked for Early & Daniels Co. as an executive secretary until she retired in 1976. She also did volunteer work as a regent of Daughters of Isabella and a member of St. Mary Ladies Auxiliary at her parish, St. Benedict Church in Covington.
After she retired, she worked part-time for the bishop of Covington. She was a member of the Benedictine Guild, and was publicity director of the St. Charles Care Center Auxiliary.
She also was a Eucharistic minister.
Ms. Schroder suffered from bone cancer, and as she got older, her pain was at times excruciating, Moeves said. But she continued ministering to people in need of God and mentoring people considering converting to Catholicism.
"She offered up all her suffering to the poor souls in purgatory."
