Rev. Harley Hensley, from miner to evangelist
Rev. Harley Hensley became a minister late in life.
But that didn't stop him from having an active ministry that reached people in Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana, Virginia, West Virginia and Michigan.
"He preached sinners to repent. Everyone loved him. He was a good father and a good husband, " said his wife of 63 years, Audrey M. Hensley. "He was loved by everyone and had lots of friends in different states."
Rev. Hensley, 79, of Taylor Mill, died Monday at his home. He was an evangelist and member of the Community Pentecostal Church in Independence.
A son, Robert Hensley, died in 1995.
Rev. Hensley was from Harlan County, where he was a coal miner for many years.
He moved to Northern Kentucky in 1952 and lived in Newport and Ft. Thomas.
He worked at the General Electric plant in Evendale for four years and later began his ministry from his home.
Rev. Hensley played the guitar and sang country music.
He toured in a band with family members.
Other survivors include sons, Harley Hensley Jr. of Independence, Dennis Hensley and John Hensley Jr., both of Taylor Mill, and Jesse Hensley of Williamstown; daughters, Barbara Ballard of Independence, Irene Schwaller of Taylor Mill and Judy Ireland of Florence; sisters, Mary Prizer and Leona Breashers, both of Dayton, Ohio; 25 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at the church.
Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the church. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.

Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Independence, is handling arrangements.
James Donald Beach, 68, of Covington, died Sunday at his home.
Survivors include his wife, Peggy Beach.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Highland Cemetery, Ft. Mitchell. C&C; Mortuary Service, Covington, is handling arrangements.
Betty Jane Burroughs Cochran, 73, of Independence, died Tuesday at her home.
She was a homemaker and a member of Community Pentecostal Church, Independence.
Her husband, Delbert Cochran, died in 1996.
Survivors include sons, Robert Lee Smith of Independence and Teddy Ray Cochran of Louisville; daughters, Shirley Ann Perkins of Cincinnati and Vickie Lynn Lay of Crittenden; a stepsister, Carolyn Points of Covington; 16 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Independence.
Visitation will begin there at 2:30 p.m. Thursday.
Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.
Eleanor Delaney Gillespie, 66, of Latonia, died Tuesday at her home.
Arrangements are pending at Woodhead Funeral Home, Falmouth.
Robert Lawrence Harman, 48, of Ludlow, was found dead Nov. 9 at his home. He was known locally as Robert Lay.
Survivors include a daughter, Christie Lee Harman of Minnesota; his parents, Robert and Wanda Harman of Kent, Wash.; and a sister, Shelly Christin Harman of Albany, Ore.
Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. today at Highland Cemetery, Ft. Mitchell. C&C; Mortuary Service, Covington, is handling arrangements.
Elizabeth Herzog, 92, of Ludlow, died at 11:05 p.m. Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington.
Arrangements are pending at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow.
John Carl Holman, 77, of Florence, died at 9:20 a.m. Tuesday at his home.
He was a retired cell owner with General Electric, and a retired Senior Master Sgt. in the Air Force.
He was a member of Florence Masonic Lodge No. 949 F&AM, Indra Consistory Scottish Rite and the Syrian Shrine.
He also was a member of York Rite, and Knights Templar.
Survivors include his wife, Lola Scott Holman; daughters, Carolyn Holman of Florence and Donna Holman Hines of Woodruff, S.C.; a sister, Mary Wilhite of Connersville, Ind.; brothers, Maurice E. Holman of Brookville, Ind., and Robert E. Holman of Melbourne, Fla.; and one grandchild.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence.
Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Friday.
Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.

Ruth Jarvis,, 83, of Newport, died at 11:30 a.m. Friday at University Hospital, Cincinnati.
She was a retired employee of Atlas Dry Cleaners.
Survivors include a brother, Robert Jarvis of Highland Heights; and sisters Dorothy Fitzer and Helen Myers, both of Southgate.
Combined services and visitation will be at 7 tonight at Don Catchen and Son Funeral Home, Covington.
Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Ft. Thomas.
Ellsworth "Kenny" Kidwell, 63, of Astor, Fla., formerly of Covington, died Saturday at his home.
He was a member of Teamsters Local No. 100, Cincinnati, and an Army veteran of the Korean War.
Survivors include sons, Cecil Kidwell of Florence and Darrell Kidwell of Bellevue; daughters, Debra Kidwell of Somerset and Toni Marie Kidwell of Grant County; a brother, Elmer Kidwell of Williamstown; and four grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Eckler-Hudson Funeral Home, Dry Ridge.
Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Thursday.
Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Ft. Mitchell.
Verdella Kinman, 74, of Williamstown, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center, Grant County.
Arrangements are pending at the Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Williamstown.
James William Wolfe, 79, of Williamstown, died at 7:30 a.m. Monday at Grant Manor Health Care Center in Williamstown.
He was a retired mechanic and farmer.
Survivors include brothers, Everett Lee Wolfe of Covington and Ralph Edward Wolfe of Florence; and sisters, Anna Margaret McKinney of Villa Hills and Nora Mae Woolf of Crescent Springs.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Taylor Mill.
Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Walton Cemetery.
