August Luersen, man of kindness
August H. "Aug" Luersen couldn't say no to anyone in need.
"He never turned anybody down, whether it was church, neighbors that lived on the street - he never said no to anybody, " his son, Paul Luersen of Ft. Thomas, said.
Mr. Luersen, a carpenter since he was 15 years old, used his craft to aid others, helping build homes for his five children.
Mr. Luersen, 83, of Ft. Thomas, died at 8:40 p.m. Thursday at his home.
He was a retired carpenter with Drees Home Builders, Inc., and a member of Carpenters Union Local No. 698. He was a member of the St. Therese Holy Name Society, and the Over 50 Club.
"He was a peaceful, prayerful man, " Paul Luersen said. "He went to church every day."
Though he retired at 62, Mr. Luersen stayed active in his union, receiving his 50-year pin in 1996.
But his profession still took a back seat to his family and faith.
"He spent all his time with the family. He loved being around kids. He just adored the grandchildren, " Paul Luersen said.
Other survivors include his wife, Mildred Schack Luersen; daughters, Norelyn Springer of Kettering, Ohio, Wilma Luersen of Ft. Thomas and Joan Luersen-Uible of Batavia, Ohio; sons, Thomas and Carl Luersen of Southgate; sisters, Rose Luersen and Armella Roth of Santa Barbara, Calif.; a brother, Harold Luersen of Cold Spring; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Therese Church, Southgate. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Ft. Thomas. Prayers will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Ft. Thomas. Memorials are suggested to Right to Life, 509 Scott St., Covington, Ky., 41011.
Stella M. Conway, 84, of Newport, died Friday at her daughter's home in Vero Beach, Fla.
She was a homemaker.
Survivors include a daughter, Patricia Cope of Vero Beach; a son, Samuel Flack of Newport; four grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Radel Funeral Home, Newport, with visitation from 5 to 9 p.m. Monday. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.
Dorothy Mae Dickerson, 80, of Warsaw, died Thursday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence.
She was a homemaker and a member of Paint Lick Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Harold Dickerson; sons, Alva Lewis Dickerson of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., James Robert Dickerson of Burlington and Gregory Allen Dickerson of Florence; a daughter, Barbara Ann Dickerson of Cincinnati; a brother, Nathan Hopper of Greendale, Ind.; a sister, Rose Brewer of Walton; nine grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Paint Lick Baptist Church. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at Carlton-Lowder Funeral Home, Warsaw. Burial will be in Paint Lick Cemetery. Christian J. Ebert Sr., 97, of Highland Heights, died at 10:05 p.m. Thursday at Lakeside Place Nursing Home, Highland Heights.
He was the retired proprietor of Ebert Meats, Bellevue.
His wife, Stella Worth Ebert, died in 1983. Survivors include sons, Andrew C. Ebert of Port Charlotte, Fla., Christian J. Ebert Jr. and John Ebert of Southgate; a daughter, Carol A. Arasmith of Harrodsburg; 11 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Ft. Thomas. Memorials are suggested to St. John United Church of Christ, Park Avenue and Nelson Place, Newport, Ky. 41071. Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Ft. Thomas, is in charge.
Arthur Haring, 74, of Ghent, died at 9:38 a.m. Wednesday in Carrollton from injuries suffered in an auto accident the previous day.
He was a self-employed logger and an Army veteran of World War II. His wife, Marguerite Blakey Haring, also died in the accident.
Survivors include stepsons, Douglas Saville of Sanders, David Saville of St. Louis and Michael Blakey of Cincinnati; stepdaughters, Rosa Saville of Sanders, Kimberly Blakey of St. Louis and Patty Blakey of Cincinnati; a sister, Bess Lovins of St. Louis; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow, with visitation at noon. Burial will be in Independence Cemetery.
Marguerite Blakey Haring, 84, of Ghent, died at 11:35 a.m. Tuesday in Carrollton of injuries suffered in an auto accident.
She was a self-employed beautician.
Her husband, Arthur Haring, died in the accident.
Survivors include sons, Douglas Saville of Sanders, David Saville of St. Louis and Michael Blakey of Cincinnati; daughters, Rosa Saville of Sanders, Kimberly Blakey of St. Louis and Patty Blakey of Cincinnati; a sister, Catherine Taylor of Cincinnati; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow, with visitation at noon. Burial will be in Independence Cemetery.
Emma Kate Mains King, 90, of Augusta, died at 6 p.m. Thursday at Extenda Care, Augusta.
She was a home health-care nurse and a member of Powersville Christian Church.
Her husband, Carl King, died in 1981. Survivors include sons, Billie Thomas King of Augusta, Walter King of Hamilton, Ohio, and Carl King Jr. and Herbert King of Brooksville; a daughter, Dorothy Bay of Erlanger; 20 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Moore and Parker Funeral Home, Brooksville, with visitation from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday. Burial will be in Powersville Cemetery.
Lucille Cunningham Leslie, 86, of Cynthiana, died Friday at Columbia Hospital, Frankfort.
She was a homemaker and a member of Cynthiana First United Methodist Church, the Harrison County Women's Club, Harrison Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, the Harrison County Garden Club, and Bird Lebus Circle.
Her husband, Ralph Leslie, died in 1996. Survivors include daughters, Charlotte Wilson of Cynthiana and Mary Lu Leslie Link of Lawrenceburg; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Monday at Whaley-McCarty Funeral Home, Cynthiana, with visitation from 3 to 4 p.m. Sunday. Burial will be in Battle Grove Cemetery, Cynthiana.

Robert Eugene Poe, 72, of Cynthiana, died Wednesday at Robertson County Health Care Center, Mt. Olivet.
He was a farmer and a groundskeeper with several country clubs and was a World War II veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Versel Theld Poe; a son, Gene Poe of Cynthiana; stepsons, William Carol of North Carolina and Tommy Wainwright of Arkansas; a daughter, Ninia Stanfield of Harrison County; stepdaughters, Dorothy Richey of Kansas and Shirley Walker of Arkansas; brothers, Helm Poe of Harveysburg, Ohio, and Raymond Poe of Lexington; sisters, Virginia Helpenstine of Paris, Ky., Lenora Poe West Williams of Florida and Pauline Singleton of Columbus, Ohio; five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and seven step-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at Drake Funeral Home, Cynthiana, with visitation from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday. Burial will be in Carlisle Cemetery.
Ruby Criswell Wells, 84, of Cynthiana, died Thursday at Harrison Memorial Hospital in Cynthiana.
She was a homemaker and a member of Cynthiana First United Methodist Church.
Her husband, Ellis Wells, died in 1992.
Survivors include sons, Larry Wells of Tarpon Springs, Fla., and Donald C. Wells of Cynthiana; daughters, Janice Smith of Cynthiana and Joyce Courtney of West Chester, Ohio; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Drake Funeral Home, Cynthiana, with visitation from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday.
Burial will be in Battle Grove Cemetery, Cynthiana.
