William L. Sexton, Hall of Fame umpire
For years, he was considered one of the top umpires in Northern Kentucky, calling everything from Knothole games to Cincinnati Reds exhibitions.
William L. Sexton, 83, of Covington, died at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at St. Charles Care Center in Covington.
He was a member of the Northern Kentucky Sports Hall of Fame and Queen City Umpires.
"I was extremely proud of him, " said a son, Thomas J. Sexton of Richwood. "I would guess you would call him a role model. He had a tremendous work ethic and moral ethics. Everybody respected and loved him."
Mr. Sexton was a retired operations manager with Western Union Telegraph in Cincinnati.
He helped coach his son's Knothole baseball team, which won two national championships. At the time, the family lived in Dayton and Mr. Sexton ran for the Dayton Board of Education. He won and became chairman of the board. He served in the early 1960s.
Mr. Sexton, who played baseball in high school, took up softball before he began umpiring.
He was behind the plate in Knothole and high-school baseball games, fast-pitch softball games and Cincinnati Reds exhibition games. His son recalls meeting some of the Reds' players during the exhibitions.
Mr. Sexton was selected to umpire the Reds' exhibitions because he was "one of the best umpires in the whole area, " Thomas Sexton said.
Mr. Sexton lived in Madison, Wis., from 1965 until 1987, retiring in 1985 as corporate secretary for a department store there.
When he moved to Wisconsin, Mr. Sexton introduced Madison - a center of fast-pitch softball - to the slow-pitch game. When he left Madison, there were about 300 slow-pitch teams in the area, his son said.
Mr. Sexton moved back to Northern Kentucky when his health began to fail.
Mr. Sexton was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Latonia.
He was a former member of St. Paul United Church of Christ in Dayton and a member of the Henry Barnes Masonic Lodge in Dayton.
Other survivors include his wife, Ruth L. Stegemeier Sexton; a son, Richard W. Sexton of Columbus, Ohio; a daughter, Marilyn R. Anderson of Virginia Beach, Va.; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia. Visitation will begin there at noon Tuesday. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate. Memorials are suggested to Trinity United Methodist Church, 101 E. Southern Ave., Latonia, Ky. 41015.
Carl L. Byrge, 73, of Covington, died at 6 a.m. Saturday at his home. He was a retired driver with Norbar Trucking Co., Cincinnati, and a former room- service waiter with Terrace Hilton Hotel. He was a member of American Legion Post No. 203, Latonia, and was an Army veteran of World War II. His wife, Clara Mae Byrge, died in 1992.
Survivors include sons, Michael Byrge and Darryl Byrge, both of Covington; a daughter, Pamela Humphrey of Sadieville; a sister, Gracie Schekel of Gary, Ind.; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Services will be at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow, is handling arrangements.
James Coldiron, 49, of Verona, died today at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. Survivors include his wife, Lisa Coldiron.
Arrangements are pending at Hamilton-Stanley Funeral Home, Verona.
Goldie Houston Collins, 83, of Union, died at 7:35 p.m. Saturday at Gardenview II nursing home, Cincinnati. She was a retired machine operator.
Survivors include her husband, Charles Collins; a brother, Robert Houston of Russell Springs; and sisters, Edna Gibson of Ludlow and July Seireveld of Kentucky.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Hamilton-Stanley Funeral Home, Verona. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 tonight tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Ft. Mitchell.
John Alvin Cooper, 60, of Florence, died at 9:25 a.m. Saturday at St. Luke Hospital West in Florence. He was a refrigeration maintenance worker with SSE Manufacturing, Boone County.
Survivors include his wife, Carol Cobb Cooper; sons, John A. Cooper Jr. of Carrollton, Mo., Gary Lynn of Marshall, Mo., and Jason Lynn Cooper of Florence; a daughter, Deborah Ann Cooper of Marshall, Mo.; brothers, James Cobb of Carrollton and Bobby Cobb of Jefferson City, Mo.; and 11 grandchildren.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Weiker Funeral Home in Slater, Mo. Visitation will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Gilliam cemetery in Gilliam, Mo. Zetta B. Davis, 83, of Maysville, died Saturday at Miami Valley Hospital in Dayton, Ohio. She was a machine operator with Carnation Can Co., Maysville, and a member of Maysville Church of the Nazarene.
Survivors include a daughter, Jeanette Hodge of Fairborn, Ohio; a son, Ronnie Davis of Salvisa; a stepson, Darrell Davis of Zanesville, Ohio; sisters, Lula Schuman of Osgood, Ind., and Idelia Sprowl of Ripley, Ohio; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Brell and Son Funeral Home, Maysville. Visitation will be after 6 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery, Maysville.
Virgil Day Dillon, 84, of Sardis, died Friday at Robertson County Health Care Center, Mt. Olivet. He was a retired construction worker and a member of Sardis United Methodist Church. He was a member of Masonic Lodge No. 291 F&AM, and an Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include sons, John Wayne Dillon of Florence, Tom Dillon of Ocala, Fla., David Dillon of Melbourne and Jim Dillon of Fresno, Calif.; daughters, Virginia Wright and Muzetta Norris, both of Mt. Olivet and Judy Price Peltier of Troy, Ohio; sisters, Glendora Myers and Lucille Bailey, both of Mt. Olivet; 16 grandchildren and 16 great- grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Robertson County Funeral Home, Mt. Olivet. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. tonight at the funeral home, with Masonic services at 6 p.m. Burial will be in Shannon Cemetery, Harrison County. Memorials are suggested to Sardis United Methodist Church, or the Hospice of Hope.
Ruth C. Hudepohl, 84, of Ft. Thomas, died at 6:08 a.m. Saturday at Baptist Convalescent Center, Newport. She was a homemaker and a member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, Bellevue. She was a member of Ft. Thomas Homemakers. Her husband, Edward Hudepohl, died in 1994.
Survivors include a son, Ron Hudepohl of Dayton, Ohio; a daughter, Gail Houston of Wilder; eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Ft. Thomas. Visitation will begin there at 4 p.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate. Memorials are suggested to Baptist Convalescent Center, 120 Main St., Newport, Ky. 41071.
Marie T. Maxwell, 86, of Dayton, died Saturday at St. Luke Hospital East, Ft. Thomas. She was a sales clerk with Pogue's department store, Cincinnati, and a member of St. Bernard Church, Dayton. She was a member of the church 55 Club. Her husband, William H. Maxwell, died in 1974.
Survivors include a son, William E. Maxwell of Bellevue; four grandchildren, six step- grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and 15 step-great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Bellevue. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Cincinnati.
Goldie Mae Taylor, 83, of Bracken County, died Sunday at Harrison Memorial Hospital, Cynthiana.
Arrangements are pending at Peoples Funeral Home, Falmouth.
Chester Williams Sr., 55, of Lexington, formerly of Harrison County, died Friday at St. Joseph Hospital in Lexington. He was an assistant manager with Buckland Farm, Lexington.
Survivors include his wife, Ruby Isaac Williams; sons, Paul Williams, Chester Williams Jr. and Jeffery Williams, all of Lexington; daughters, Pam Watson and Sandra Marcom, both of Cynthiana, Donna Williams, Melissa Williams and Ashley Williams, all of Lexington; brothers, Lester Williams of Winchester, Melvin Williams and Junior Williams, both of Paris, Ky.; sisters, Louise True and Jeanette Hunt, both of Paris, Nancy Wilson and Mary Whitaker, both of Cynthiana, Etta Faye Schwanke of Berry, Sudie King of Falmouth and Goldie Jett of Mt. Sterling; and nine grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Ware Funeral Home, Cynthiana. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Battle Grove Cemetery, Cynthiana.
Willie J. Wilson, 80, of Corinth, died Friday at Garrard County Memorial Hospital in Garrard. He was a retired employee of Brown and Williamson Tobacco Corp., Lexington, and a Navy veteran of World War II.
Survivors include brothers, James Edward Wilson of Milford, Ohio, and Joseph Ray Wilson of Goshen, Ohio; and sisters, Vernell Brock of Hot Springs, Ark., Marie Crank of Crab Orchard and Eva Voelcker of San Antonio.
Graveside services were Sunday at IOOF Cemetery, Corinth. McKnight-Martin Funeral Home, Crab Orchard, handled arrangements.
