Edward J. Fey, "radio man' for police

With his booming voice, Edward J. Fey was seldom misunderstood as he dispatched Covington police officers throughout the city.

Mr. Fey, 77, of Latonia, died at 5:40 a.m. Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood.

"He was kind of strict, but went out of his way to help you, " said his daughter, Leah Applegate of Latonia.

Mr. Fey retired from the Covington Police Department after 30 years on the force.

His favorite position was dispatcher, or "radio man, " as he called it. He dispatched officers for seven years, his daughter said.

"My dad had a very loud, distinctive booming voice and everybody could understand him over their radios, " Mrs. Applegate said.

Mr. Fey became a lieutenant while working as a dispatcher. He was back patrolling the streets when he left the force.

"He retired because it was getting pretty rough out there, " Mrs. Applegate said.

Mr. Fey was director of the Covington City Employees Credit Union Board and a member of Covington Fraternal Order of Police No. 1. He was a member of Covington Retired Police Association and helped dedicate the new Covington Police Department building.

He was a member of Holy Cross Church in Latonia and a former Chief Ranger of the Catholic Order of Foresters. He also was a Navy veteran of World War II and was injured on the flight deck of an aircraft carrier during an accident.

In his youth, Mr. Fey enjoyed boating on the Ohio River. He and his wife of 57 years, Rita M. Born Fey, also traveled to Pigeon Forge, Tenn., for vacation every summer for the past 30 years. They stayed in the same room at the same motel each time, and the staff there became like family. In fact, Mr. Fey received a bouquet of flowers from the owners of the motel last week when they learned he was sick.

Mr. Fey also leaves a son, Roger Fey of Covington; brothers, William R. Fey of Ross, Ohio, and Robert L. Fey of Florence; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 9 a.m. Saturday at the church. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia. Prayers will be at 8:40 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

A native of south Texas, Rev. Tucker, 42, of Independence, was raised in Walton and graduated from Simon Kenton High School.

He knew as a youngster that he wanted to become a pastor and for three years had been the leader of the Falmouth Church of the Nazarene.

"His last service was on Sept. 13. On Sept. 11, he baptized five people in the Licking River, and two were his children, " said Rev. Tucker's wife of 16 years, Teresa Rose Tucker.
