Poetry, teaching children filled Ruth Sullivan's heart
Christmas poems were regular gifts from Ruth Harrison Sullivan to her family and friends.
"She wrote us a Christmas poem every year. She was a special person, " said Mrs. Sullivan's nephew, Terry Gillespie of Dry Ridge.
A retired elementary school teacher and avid poet, Mrs. Sullivan, 85, of Williamstown, died Sunday morning in St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood, after a brief illness.
"She was my first roommate in college. She was already teaching at the time and I was assigned to her, " recalled Kentucky Post columnist Alice Kennelly Roberts.
"We corresponded almost weekly, and every letter she wrote contained poetry. Her poetry was always very religious in nature. The poem on her Christmas card last year was "My Christmas Prayer, ' " said Mrs. Roberts.
Mrs. Sullivan graduated from high school at age 16, and was also a graduate of Eastern Kentucky University, her nephew said. She taught in one-room schools at Jonesville and Stewardsville in Grant County. She also taught at the Heekin School, which was on her own great-grandfather's farm.
At the time of her retirement, Mrs. Sullivan taught first-grade at Williamstown Independent School, Gillespie said.
Mrs. Sullivan was a descendant of former U.S. President William Henry Harrison, and of Grant County pioneers, Gillespie said. She was born in a house that dated back to an ancestor's land grant in 1840 and the former Salem United Methodist Church, of which she was a member, was on land once owned by another pioneer ancestor.
Mrs. Sullivan was the Sunday school superintendent at the Salem United Methodist Church, succeeding her late husband, John T. Sullivan.
Mrs. Sullivan had no children, but was largely a parent to him, Gillespie said. "I stayed with her summers when I was a child, and lived there while going to high school and college. She was a like a mother to me, " he said.
Mrs. Sullivan was a member of Grant County Retired Teachers Association. Her husband died in 1960.
She also leaves nieces, Jennie Louise Vaske of Cincinnati and Verajean Smith of North Carolina.
