Charles Butler, liked to paint
Charles Butler's life was marked with color.
When he was younger, he worked for Walt Disney Studios in California, painting vivid backgrounds for cartoon strips.
Later in life, he made painting his hobby, and loved to use color to contrast dark and light.
"He painted for color, " said his wife, Alice Butler. "He liked to show the light to see how he could express it on the canvas."
Mr. Butler of Glencoe died at 12:30 p.m. Monday at St. Luke Hospital West in Florence. He was 79.
He grew up in the San Bernadino area of California and briefly worked for Walt Disney Studios on several cartoon strips, Mrs. Butler said.
"They were making something to do with Technicolor plates, " she said. "The man he worked for was inventing a new process . . . and I remember him saying he did something for "Fantasia.' "
When World War II began, he was stationed in England as a teletype operator in the signal and intelligence corps. He also served in the Army's spearhead division.
He returned from the war in 1946 and went to college in California. He married
his first wife, had four children and started a trucking business, Butler Trucking Co.
In the mid-1970s, Mr. Butler divorced and sold his trucking company. He started painting and took several art classes. He met his second wife, Alice, who was born in Northern Kentucky, and they married
in 1978.
"We came out here to visit a lot, but then we just decided to stay, " she said. They lived in Glencoe for 10 years. He continued to paint - mostly with oils - and he loved to paint scenes of desserts and the ocean.
