Robert Rankin, writer, outdoorsman

Robert M. Rankin didn't waste much time.

A writer, world traveler, outdoorsman and family man, the Dayton native seized the opportunities he was offered.

Mr. Rankin, 80, of Ft. Thomas, died at 2:30 p.m. Monday at St. Luke Hospital East, Ft. Thomas.

He was an outdoors writer with The Cincinnati Post, a retired outdoors editor and columnist with the Cincinnati Enquirer, and a journalism professor at Northern Kentucky University.

Mr. Rankin also contributed to the Falmouth Outlook, the Campbell County Recorder and Red Duck Magazine. He was a former track standout at the University of Kentucky, and was a member of the Northern Kentucky Sports Hall of Fame.

He was president of the Fin, Fur and Feather division of the Cincinnati Club, and was a member of the board of directors of the Outdoor Writers Association of America. He was president of the Ohio and Kentucky OWAA, and the Kentucky Outdoor Press Association. He also was a member of St. John United Church of Christ in Newport, the Arctic Circle Club and Outdoor Writers of America. And he was an Army veteran of World War II.

"He was into everything, " said his wife, Evelyn Furrow Rankin. "Fishing and gardening were his two most favorite."

Mr. Rankin reported on resorts and attractions around the world, taking a special liking to the Arctic Circle. Mrs. Rankin said he traveled there many times.

His wealth of experience made him a favorite teacher and speaker in Northern Kentucky.

"He was always asked to make speeches at clubs. He was real funny, and everyone enjoyed him, " his wife said.

He helped form the Ft. Thomas Swim Club, A.J. Jolly Park and Kincaid Lake State Park, Mrs. Rankin said.

Mr. Rankin recently finished writing a book on Newport's transformation from a hotbed of gambling and other illegal activity to its modern incarnation.

His daughter, Laura R. Feltner of Falmouth, is copy-editing the book.

Other survivors include a daughter, Linda Rankin of Ft. Thomas.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Ft. Thomas. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.

Memorials are suggested to St. John's United Church of Christ, Park Ave. and Nelson Place, Newport, Ky. 41071.

Arizona Bailey, 64, of Cincinnati, died at 11:12 a.m. Monday at Batavia Convalescent Nursing Center, Cincinnati. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include sons, Tobie Bailey of Covington and Steven Bailey of Dayton; daughters, Helen Baker of East Liverpool, Ohio, and Melissa Bailey of Covington; brothers, Leroy Wilburn and Junior Wilburn, both of Michigan, and Claude Wilburn of London; and a sister, Lois Bates of Covington.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Latonia. Visitation will begin there at noon Thursday.

Burial will be in Linden Grove Cemetery, Covington.

William "Moose" Borcher, 66, of Newport, died Monday at Mercy Anderson Hospital, Cincinnati. He was a machine operator with Specialty Envelope Co., Cincinnati.

Survivors include a daughter, Ruth Borcher of Newport; sisters, Cathy Smith of Newport, Ruth Smith of Erlanger, Nancy Riley of Williamstown and Margie Rainey of Hamilton, Ohio; and brothers, Tom Borcher and Jim Borcher, both of Cincinnati, and Tim Borcher of Newport.

Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Thursday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Newport. Visitation will begin there at 9:30 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in St. John Cemetery, Ft. Mitchell.

Charles F. Buchanan Jr., 33, of Wilder, died at 12:44 p.m. Monday at St. Luke Hospital East, Ft. Thomas. He was an assistant vice president of Fifth Third Bank, Cincinnati, and a member of St. Joseph Church, Cold Spring.

Survivors include his wife, Holly Murray Buchanan; a daughter, Allison Elizabeth Buchanan, at home; a son, Andrew Murray Buchanan, at home; his mother, Betty Poe Buchanan of Highland Heights; sisters, Donna Riddle of Winchester, Ind., and Jana Cleves of Brookfield, Wis.; and a brother, Ricky Buchanan of Midway, Ohio.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the church. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 tonight at Dobbling Funeral Home, Bellevue. Cremation will be at Hillside Chapel, Cincinnati.

Memorials are suggested to the Buchanan Children's Fund at any Northern Kentucky location of Fifth Third Bank.

Rosemary Tenhundfeld Chalk, 73, of Newport, died at 12:35 p.m. Monday at St. Luke Hospital East, Ft. Thomas. She was a homemaker and a mem ber of Daughters of Isabella. Her husband, Robert E. Chalk, died in October.

Survivors include sons, Richard Chalk of Dallas, Thomas Chalk of Taylor Mill, Michael Chalk of Southgate and David Chalk of St. Louis; sisters, Jean Wimberg of Newport and Dorothy Boemker of Covington; brothers, Rev. Paul Tenhundfeld of Camp Springs, Ralph Tenhundfeld of New Orleans and John Tenhundfeld of Cincinnati; and eight grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Stephen Cemetery, Newport. Visitation will be from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Friday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Newport. Prayers will be at 9:30 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Ft. Thomas. Memorials are suggested to Holy Spirit School, 840 Washington Ave., Newport, Ky. 41071.

William C. Dungan, 83, of Williamstown, died at 3:50 a.m. Tuesday at Florence Park Care Center, Florence, after an extended illness. He was a retired water conservation specialist with Duval Mining Co. in Tuscon, Ariz. He also was a former self-employed truck driver, and a veteran of both the Army and Navy.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Cardell Dungan; a son, Gary Dungan of Ft. Mitchell; brothers, Calvin Dungan of Florence and Edgar Dungan of Ft. Mitchell; sisters, Esther Calvert and Anna Wallace, both of Covington; and one grandson.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Williamstown. Visitation will begin there at noon Friday. Burial will be in Williamstown Cemetery.

Richard H. Eastin, 76, of Cincinnati, died Monday at his home. He was a truck driver and a World War II veteran.

Survivors include daughters, Barbara Cooper of Newport, Betty Kreutzkamp of Kentucky, JoAnn Shearer of Washington Court House, Ohio, Dorothy Merritt, Viola Smith and Patricia McMahan, all of Cincin nati; sons, Earl Meyer, Richard Eastin Jr., and Victor Eastin, all of Cincinnati; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Friday at Neidhard-Minges Funeral Home, Cincinnati. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Cincinnati.

Alma Elam, 64, of Florence, died at 9:30 a.m. Monday at her home. She was a retired assembly worker with Shell Leather Goods, Cincinnati, and a member of Kento-Boo Baptist Church, Florence. Her husband, William Elam, died in 1984.

Survivors include a son, James Riley of Amelia, Ohio; daughters, Jackie Hyden of Florence, Tracey Yancey of Newport and Marilyn Barrett of South Lebanon, Ohio; brothers, Van Allen of Missouri and Gordon Allen of Newport; sisters, Audrey Layne of Richwood, Betty Sweeny of Pikeville, Fay Cook of Florence, Jessie Grimers of Independence and Shirley Simmons of Morrow, Ohio; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the church. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 tonight at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Erlanger, and at 10 a.m. Friday at the church. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger. Memorials are suggested to the church building fund, 634 Kentoboo Ave., Florence, Ky. 41042.

Mildred Hehman, 95, of Ft. Thomas, died at 7:20 p.m. Monday at Madonna Manor, Villa Hills. She was a retired bookkeeper with Cincinnati Paper & Woodenware. Her husband, Stanley N. Hehman, died in 1972.

Survivors include stepdaughters, Suzane Frommeyer of Cold Spring and Sister Nance Marie Hehman S. N. D. of Alexandria; stepsons, Paul Hehman of Ft. Mitchell, Richard Hehman of Indianapolis and Rev. Lawrence Hehman of Lexington; and a sister, Jeanne W. Ackerman of Ft. Thomas.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Thomas Church, Ft. Thomas. Visitation will be from 9 to 10 a.m. Thursday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Ft. Thomas. Prayers will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Ft. Thomas. Robert J. Homan, 61, of Sarasota, Fla., formerly of Northern Kentucky, died Sunday at Sarasota Memorial Hospital.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Byers Homan; daughters, Nancy Selby of Hebron and Julie Reno of Florence; a son, Robert Homan Jr. of Richwood; and sisters, Ruth Flesch and Mary Homan, both of Florence.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Michael the Archangel Church in Siesta Key, Fla. Memorial services will be at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at St. Joseph Church, Crescent Springs. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Martin Funeral Home in Sarasota. Memorials are suggested to American Heart Association, 1885 Dixie Highway, Suite 250, Ft. Beverly Sophie Honebrink, 82, of Knoxville, Tenn., formerly of Bellevue, died Monday at Parkwest Hospital in Knoxville. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include daughters, Karen Krumm of Knoxville and Jan Coston of Grand Rapids, Mich.; a brother, Jack Weber of Ft. Thomas; a sister, LaVerne Lyons of San Antonio; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Christ Church United Church of Christ, Ft. Thomas. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Ft. Thomas. Highland Memorial Funeral Home, Knoxville, is handling arrangements.

Mary Margaret Kennedy, 68, of Independence, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. She was a computer programmer with West ern-Southern Life Insurance Co. Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Patrick Church, Independence. Burial will be in St. Cecilia Cemetery, Independence. Memorials are suggested to the church, 3280 Mills Road, Independence, Ky. 41052. Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Florence, is handling arrangements.

Arlana M. Koors, 70, of Stamping Ground, formerly of Kenton County, died Monday at Columbia Hospital, Georgetown. She was a retired employee of Plastic Molding Co., Cincinnati, and a member of St. John Church, Georgetown. Her husband, Robert Koors, died in 1983.

Survivors include her daughter, Alanah Purcell of Stamping Ground; four grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the church. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 tonight at Tucker, Yocum & Wilson Funeral Home, Stamping Ground. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger.

Emma Stoker, 84, of Burlington, died Tuesday at Gallatin County Health Care Center, Warsaw.

Arrangements are pending at Linnemann Funeral Home, Burlington.

Robert Louis Thornton, 71, of Morning View, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. He was a switchman and conductor with Southern Railroad, and a Navy veteran.

Survivors include a son, Dennis R. Thornton of Celina, Ohio; a sister, Emma Jane Spillman of Florence; and a brother, Thomas R. Thornton of Marianna, Fla.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Independence. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Independence Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, 401 E. 20th St., Covington, Ky. 41014.

Edna Diane Gartner Works, 53, of Alexandria, died at 4:08 p.m. Monday at St. Luke Hospital East, Ft. Thomas. She was a manager of Sunshine Cleaners, Alexandria, and a member of First Baptist Church, Alexandria.

Survivors include her husband, Charles Works; daughters, Denise Wallace of Highland Heights and Charlotte Works of Alexandria; her father, George P. Gartner of Ft. Wright; and a brother, George Gartner of Sun City, Ariz.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the church. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Alexandria Funeral Home. Burial will be in Alexandria Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the church, 104 Washington St., Alexandria, Ky. 41001.
