Pendleton's Dean Richard Maxedon, famed emcee of 'Midwestern Hayride'
The face and voice of Dean Richard Maxedon were as familiar to many of the area's residents over the years as those of members of their own families.
Mr. Maxedon, better known by his stage name of Dean Richards, was a member of an extended family - both the performers and the audience of the popular television show "Midwestern Hayride."
For more than 15 years, Mr. Maxedon was the show's master of ceremonies. He also performed, usually singing with his wife, D. J. "Penny" Maxedon.
Mr. Maxedon, 77, of Pendleton County, died Friday at his home.
"The show was very professionally done, and Dean was a big part of that, " Post columnist and television veteran Nick Clooney said of "Midwestern Hayride."
A native of Illinois, Mr. Maxedon began performing on the radio as a teen-ager. "He was just 13 and was with Gene Autry and Smiley Burnette, " said Mrs. Maxedon.
Later, Mr. Maxedon performed on a number of radio stations, including one in Ft. Wayne, Ind., where he met and married
his wife.
The couple came to Cincinnati shortly after World War II, and were on a radio show called the "Sohio Hayride, " Mrs. Maxedon said. As two-thirds of the Lucky Penny Trio, they were among the initial performers when the show went on WLW television, she said.
For eight years Mr. Maxedon and his wife worked at radio station KMOX in St. Louis, before returning to WLW and "Hayride" in 1956. They were on the country-variety show until the early 1970s.
"The 'Midwestern Hayride' was pretty much the No. 1 program in Cincinnati for a long time. They did some absolutely marvelous country music, " said Clooney.
The Maxedons were married
for 52 years in November. Mr. Maxedon was a 50-year member of both the American Federation of Musicians, and Henry Barnes Lodge No. 607, F&AM, Mr. Maxedon in the 1960s Dayton. He was a 32nd-degree Mason.
