Josephine Shreves, hospital volunteer
For more than 20 years, Josephine Starkey Shreves volunteered at the former Booth Memorial Hospital, delivering flowers to patients and working in the gift shop.
Mrs. Shreves volunteered at the old Booth Memorial Hospital when it was in Covington and later when it moved to Florence.
"She went to the hospital every other week, " said her niece, Sally Butler of Walton. "She was just a lovely person. Very outgoing and very giving."
Mrs. Shreves, 85, of Covington, died at 9:15 a.m. Monday at St. Charles Care Center in Covington. She was a homemaker who was devoted to her late husband, Mark Shreves, her niece said.
Mrs. Shreves, who enjoyed painting and making ceramics, was a member of Covington Women's Art Club. She also was a member of First United Methodist Church in Covington and the Kilgour Chapter of the Cincinnati Bell Telephone Pioneers Club.
She loved children, Mrs. Butler said.
"She was a lady and very well loved and respected."
Other survivors include nieces and a nephew.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Oak Hills Cemetery, Cincinnati. Memorials are suggested to the church, Fifth and Greenup streets., Covington, Ky. 41011.

Alberta "Bert" Wren Brown, 70, of Covington, died at 5:28 p.m. Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was a retired bookkeeper with Otto Zimmerman Printing Co., Newport.
Survivors include her husband, Curtis Brown of Covington; daughters, Vicki Bruce and Beverly Turner, both of Independence, and Judy Combs of Hebron; brothers, Russell Wren of Mt. Carmel, Ohio, and Robert Wren of Covington; sisters, Eileen Wren of Covington and Ruby Knecht of Covington; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Taylor Mill. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Ft. Mitchell.
Helen Katherine Cortina, 92, of Highland Heights, died at 4:40 a.m. Monday at Lakeside Place Nursing Home, Highland Heights. She was a homemaker and a member of the First Baptist Church of Dayton. Her husband, Arthur Cortina, died in 1953.
Survivors include several nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Grandview Cemetery, Mentor. Dobbling Funeral Home, Bellevue, is handling arrangements.
Nancy W. Crowley, 93, of Dry Ridge, died Monday at her residence.
Arrangements are pending at the Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow.
Carl Thomas Dixius, 59, of St. Petersburg, Fla., formerly of Bellevue, died at 8:52 p.m. Thursday at University Hospital, Cincinnati. He was a retired accountant for International Harvester and an Army veteran.
Survivors include sisters, Florence Hicks and Nancy Danford, both of Bellevue, Hazel Small and Nellie Reichert, both of New Port Richey, Fla., and Dorothy Dixius of New York City; brothers, Joseph Dixius of Libertyville, Ill., James Dixius of Ft. Thomas and William Dixius of Cincinnati.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Evergreen cemetery Chapel, Southgate. Memorials are suggested to University Hospital Hepatitis Research, 234 Goodman, Cincinnati, Ohio 45219. Dobbling Funeral Home, Bellevue, is handling arrangements.
George A. Fisher, 56, of Florence, died Monday at St. Luke Hospital West in Florence. He was a waste treatment worker with Bayer Corp., Florence.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara Fisher; a son, Larry Fisher of Florence; a daughter, Lisa Pendleton of Florence; brothers, Glenn Fisher of Cincinnati, Harold Fisher of San Diego, Dale Fisher of Moores Hill, Ind., and Gary Fisher of Bright, Ind.; sisters, Donna Strom of Broomfield, Colo., Wilma Disbrow of Moores Hill, Ind., and Joyce Bruns of Batesville, Ind.; and two grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Ft. Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to charity.
Samuel Carl Frye Jr., 73, of Dry Ridge, died Sunday at Veterans Administration Hospital, Cincinnati. He was a former tax commissioner of Lewis County, Ky., and an insurance agent. He was an Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include a brother, Martin Gene Frye of Glenwood, Ind.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at East Fork Cemetery, Lewis County. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Eckler-Hudson Funeral Home, Dry Ridge.
Florian G. Johnson, 84, of Carrollton, died Sunday at his home. He was a retired farmer and a member of Monterey Baptist Church. His wife, Pearl Willena Johnson, died in 1993.
Survivors include a daughter, Sue Morgan of Carrollton; a son, Jerry W. Johnson of Worthville; three grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Tandy-Eckler-Riley Funeral Home, Carrollton. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Worthville Cemetery.
Justice John J. O'Hara, 75, of Edgewood, died Sunday at his home. He was a former justice with the Kentucky Supreme Court and a former Kenton County Commonwealth Attorney. He was a senior partner in the law firm of O'Hara, Ruberg, Taylor, Sloan & Sergent. He served as president of the Kentucky Defense Council, the National District Attorneys Association, the Commonwealth Attorneys Association and the Kenton County Bar Association. He was a fellow with the American College of Trial Lawyers and International Academy of Trial Lawyers. He was a volunteer with Lawyers for the Poor, and the 1996 Outstanding Lawyer Award winner from the Northern Kentucky Bar Association.
Justice O'Hara was a member of the Board of Directors of Carmel Manor Nursing Home, Xavier University, Xavier High School and Campbell Lodge Boys Home, where he also was a former president. He was a past president of the Friendly Sons of St. Patrick, a member of Summit Hills Country Club, and was the Kenton County Jaycees' 1956 Outstanding Man of the Year.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy A. Arnold O'Hara; sons, Michael O'Hara of Cincinnati, Kevin O'Hara of Stafford, Vt., Dennis O'Hara of Key West, Fla., and Brian O'Hara of Ft. Wright; daughters, Sharon O'Hara of Denver, Mary Keife Hyland of Memphis, Tenn., and Kit O'Hara of Covington; and 12 grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at St. Agnes Church, Ft. Wright. Visitation will begin there at 4 p.m. Thursday. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Ft. Mitchell. Brandi Lynn Owens, the daughter of Jimmy Beach and Shawna Owens of Covington, was stillborn at 4:10 p.m. Saturday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence.
Other survivors include a grandmother, Judy Owens of Covington; a step-grandfather, Gregory Leinmiller of Ludlow; and great-grandparents, Holland and Helen Davis of Covington.

Dorothy M. Rawlins, 91, of Ft. Mitchell, died at 12:45 p.m. Monday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Paul Episcopal Church, Newport. Her husband, George Douglas Rawlins, died in 1989.
Survivors include three grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Virgil E. Rigdon, 70, of Maysville, died Monday at Columbia Hospital in Maysville. He was a carpenter and construction worker.
Survivors include half-brothers, Earl Rigdon, Leonard Rigdon and Delbert Rigdon, all of Flemingsburg.

Cora Lee Smith, 84, of Maysville, died Monday at Robertson County Health Care Center, Mt. Olivet. She was a presser with Modern Laundry in Maysville.
Survivors include daughters, Ruth Smith of Norwood, Ohio and Betty Cranfill of Mt. Orab, Ohio; 13 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Robert W. Vater, 78, of Crittenden, died Monday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. He was a retired employee of American Laundry and a member of Gardnersville Christian Church.
Survivors include his wife, Blanche Brownfield Vater; a son, Rodney Vater of Grand Prairie, Texas; a daughter, Rosalee Sorrell of Covina, Calif.; a brother, Byron Vater of Cincinnati; sisters, Carrie Vater of Highland Heights and Viola Rahe of Alexandria; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Virgie B. Webb, 87, of Burlington, died at 10:20 a.m. Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington. She was a retired sales clerk with Dolly Madison Co., Cincinnati, and a member of First Baptist Church of Ludlow. Her husband, John Henry Webb, died in 1962.
Survivors include daughters, Reba Goff of Burlington and Shelba Fisher of Charleston, S.C.; a son, James L. Webb of Hebron; sisters, Lena Grimes and Rilda Crabtree, both of Crossville, Tenn.; a brother, Herbert McCloud of Crossville, Tenn.; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Bessie Lucille Wells, 83, of Brooksville, died Sunday at the Robertson County Health Care Center, Mt. Olivet. She was a homemaker and a member of McKendree United Methodist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Gayle Kenton Wells; a brother, Jesse Hamilton of Dry Ridge; and a sister, Ida Elizabeth Lynn of Ft. Mitchell.

Raymond N. West, 72, of Ft. Wright, died at 12:05 p.m. Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a retired director of Western Union in Upper Saddle River, N.J., a member of Jamaica Masonic Lodge in New York City and an Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Mary S. West; and a sister, Elizabeth Korp of Merritt Island, Fla.
