Fred Sweeney Sr., Robertson County coroner, farmer
Fred Sweeney Sr., the Robertson County coroner, died Tuesday at Harrison Memorial Hospital in Cynthiana.
Mr. Sweeney lived in Mt. Olivet and was 74. A Bracken County native who later moved to Robertson County, Mr. Sweeney became the coroner in Robertson County in the mid-1980s and was elected several times as a Democrat. His first wife, Roberta Schweitzer Sweeney, died in 1968. His second wife, Gladys Wells Cleaver Sweeney, also predeceased him.
A son, C. Michael Sweeney of May's Lick, recalls his father as a proud dairy and tobacco farmer who enjoyed swapping stories with his friends.
"He did like to go to town and loaf with members of the community. He was a charter member of the "loafing shed, ' where all the elderly gentlemen go, " Michael Sweeney said.
Mr. Sweeney's children helped on the farm and learned their father's work ethic.
"He was soft-spoken, but he could make his point known when he wanted to, " Michael Sweeney said.
"He was easy-going, but honest and fair about most things. He was trustworthy."
Mr. Sweeney also was a member of St. Rose of Lima Church in May's Lick and was an Army veteran of World War II.
Other survivors include sons, Timothy A. Sweeney of Runghill, Ohio, Steve Sweeney of Carlisle, Fred Sweeney Jr. of Augusta, and Tony Sweeney, of May's Lick, and a stepson, Mike Cleaver of Dry Ridge; daughters, Judy Sweeney of May's Lick and Sue Hatfield of Cyn thiana; a brother, Mike A. Sweeney of Florida; sisters, Mildred Schweitzer and Catherine Martin, both of Augusta; 15 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the church. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 tonight at Robertson County Funeral Home, Mt. Olivet. Burial will be in St. Augustine Catholic Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the church, 5009 Raymond Road, May's Lick, Ky. 41055, or the charity of the donor's choice.
Mina Bates, 85, of Cincinnati, died at 1:55 p.m. Monday at Bayley Place Retirement Home in Cincinnati. She was a retired cafeteria manager with St. Henry School, Elsmere, and a former Girl Scout leader. She was a member of St. Henry Altar Society. Her husband, Leland Bates, died in 1990.
Survivors include sons, Nicholas Spring of Old Forge, N.Y. and Leland Bates Jr. of Cincinnati; a daughter, Sylvia Obermeyer of North Bend, Ohio; a sister, Mary List of Utica, N.Y.; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Henry Church, Elsmere. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 tonight at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger. Entombment will be in Floral Hills Mausoleum, Taylor Mill. Walter B. Bohlinger, 87, of Erlanger, died Saturday at Florence Park Care Center, Burlington. He was a member of Teamsters Local No. 114, Cincinnati, and a member of Knights of Columbus Council No. 3908, Erlanger. He was a member of the Retired Seniors Volunteer Program.
Survivors include his wife, Gertrude Marshall Bohlinger of Erlanger; a son, Richard Bohlinger of Erlanger; a daughter, Mary Becker of Louisville; five grandchildren and one great- grandchild.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 9 a.m. Saturday at St. Henry Church, Elsmere. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger. Barbara Ann Case, 48, of Ft. Thomas, died at 7:53 a.m. Monday at St. Luke Hospital East, Ft. Thomas. She was an administrative secretary with St. Luke Hospital.
Survivors include her husband, Cecil Case; a daughter, Elizabeth Case, at home; a son, Clayton Case, at home; sisters, Artie Good of Bethel, Ohio, and Bernice Smith of Bradenton, Fla.; a brother, Tom Hazlett of Cincinnati; and stepbrothers, Jeff Striley and Paul Smith, both of Cincinnati, Jimmy Smith of Elizabethtown and Robbie Smith of Bradenton, Fla.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Ft. Thomas. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate. Memorials are suggested to St. Luke Hospital Foundation, 85 N. Grand Ave., Ft. Thomas, Ky. 41075.
J. Russ Crockett, 81, of Florence, died at 11:13 a.m. Monday at his home. He was a former finance director for the City of Covington, a member of Knights of Columbus No. 702, Bishop Flaget Fourth Degree Assembly, and a tax aide with the American Association of Retired Persons. He was a Marine Corps veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Florence Finneran Crockett; a daughter, Betty Pitman of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; sons, Joe Crockett of Covington, Bill Crockett of Ft. Wright and Ed Crockett of Frankfort; 11 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Paul Church, Florence. Entombment will be in St. Mary Mausoleum, Ft. Mitchell. William Paul Cullum, 59, of Covington, died Sunday at his home. He was a cab driver.
Survivors include a sister, LaVerne Casey of Kingsport, Tenn.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Highland Cemetery, Ft. Mitchell. C&C; Mortuary, Covington, is handling arrangements.
Alberta R. Ellis, 70, of Latonia, died at 9:56 a.m. Monday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. She was a homemaker and a volunteer at St. Elizabeth Medical Center.
Survivors include her husband, Richard Ellis; sons, Danny Ellis of Cold Springs and John Ellis of Latonia; daughters, Kathleen Ellis of Latonia, Linda Vance of Erlanger and Missie Schulkens of Alexandria; a brother, Donnie Scheibly of Alexandria; sisters, Mary Niles of Belleview, Rita Dressman of Latonia and Joan Rowe of Alexandria; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Charles F. Hollis Sr., 81, of Florence, died at 7:05 a.m. Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. He was a retired driver for Arkansas Best Freight System. He was an Army veteran of World War II and a member of Florence Christian Church, Florence.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Hollis; a son, Charles F. Hollis Jr. of Gallatin, Tenn.; a sister, Sarah Haynes of Inglis, Fla.; and two grandchildren.

Howard R. Suter, 88, of Bellevue, died Monday at his home. He was a retired machinist with Procter & Gamble, Cincinnati, and a former member of the Bellevue-Dayton Rotary Club.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia Ebert Suter; a son; Ronald Suter of Crofton, Md.; a daughter, Barbara Culp of Cold Spring; a sister, Dorothy Miller of Sarasota, Fla.; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
