Arnold Hallbach, keyboardist
Arnold Hallbach, a cabinetmaker and musician with a contagious zest for life, died Friday at St. Luke Hospital at age 81.
He was stricken with an aneurysm on Wednesday while playing music at a Christmas party at the Newport Elks Lodge in Cold Spring. He lived in Newport.
"He was gregarious and energetic and interested in 50 different things until the end of his life, " said his son-in-law, Jim Dady.
Mr. Hallbach brought a spirited warmth wherever he went, said Sister Eulaliae, activities director at Carmel Manor nursing home, where Mr. Hallbach and his wife, Virginia, had volunteered for the past nine years.
"He had a young attitude and young spirit. When he'd laugh his eyes would laugh, too, " she said. "He played keyboard and piano, and his wife led sing-alongs.
"He liked to get people interested in singing and being happy. The first year they came here they did a special party for the people at Christmas and brought presents for everyone.
"They're just generous, genuinely nice people."
Mr. Hallbach grew up in Newport. His wife, Virginia Hudepohl, was from Bellevue.
"They grew up together, " said his son-in-law.
They became a lifetime team, working together and playing together. They had been married
54 years.
Mr. Hallbach graduated from Covington Latin School at 16 and from Xavier University at age 20 with a degree in business. He worked as a manager and accountant for several companies.
He opened Hallbach's woodworking business in Bellevue, making custom cabinets for 45 years.
"He did all the work himself, " Dady said.
Mrs. Hallbach worked with him in the office. He retired a year ago.
He had a lifelong interest in photography and later ventured into videography. He played piano, organ and electronic keyboard and collected organs. He played for churches and with several ensembles for parties and special events.
He was a gardener and a writer, setting a series of childhood memoirs to paper for his family. Until recently, he owned a motorcycle.
"Our father was a lively and entertaining man who, above all, was devoted to his family, " said his son, Arnold Hallbach Jr. of Shandon, Ohio.
He was a member of St. Stephen Church in Newport, where he was former church organist. He was a member of Bellevue Senior Citizens, Ft. Thomas Retired Businessmen's Association and the Newport Elks. He was founder and former president of Tri-State Organ Club.
Besides his wife and son, survivors include another son, Raymond Hallbach of Cold Spring; daughters, Mary C. Dady of Woodlawn and Joan Schoettelkotte of Villa Hills; brothers, Robert Hallbach of El Cajon, Calif., and Paul Hallbach of Naples, Fla.; and six grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Stephen Church. Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at Dobbling Funeral Home, Ft. Thomas. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Ft. Thomas.
Memorials may be made in the form of volunteer services or contributions to Carmel Manor nursing home in Ft. Thomas.
Emma Wynn Allen, 98, of Traverse City, Mich., formerly of Covington, died Wednesday at Bortz Health Care, Traverse City. She was a homemaker and a former member of Main Street Methodist Church, Covington. Her first husband, Jessie Wynn, died in 1949. Her second husband, Frank Allen, died in 1961.
Survivors include a daughter, Norma Wynn Snowden of Traverse City; a son, Gayle B. Wynn of Ft. Mitchell; a sister, Sally Parr of Lexington; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Private services will be held in Traverse City at the convenience of the family, with graveside services to be held in Kentucky at a later date. Memorials are suggested to Asbury College Scholarship Fund, 1 Macklem Drive, Wilmore, Ky. 40390-1198. Covell Funeral Home, Traverse City (Mich.) Chapel, is handling arrangements.
Richard "Dick" R. Caverly, 69, of Florence, died at 1:28 p.m. Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a retired painter and decorator and a member of International Brotherhood of Painters and Allied Trades Union Local 1009. He was a World War II Army veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara Cassini Caverly; sons, Richard Caverly of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., and Harry W. Caverly of Independence; daughters, Vickie Gray of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., Beverly Terhune of Pompano Beach, Fla., Maria Duke of Dayton and Rhonda Buckler of Covington; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger. Memorials are suggested to American Cancer Society, 7730 U.S. 42, Suite C-6, Florence, 41042.
Diana Anita Dadosky, 40, of Florence, died at 5 p.m. Friday at St. Elizabeth North Hospice Unit.

Edward W. Gunning, 79, of Butler, died at 2:33 p.m. Thursday at St. Luke Hospital East, Ft. Thomas. He was a retired sheet-metal worker for Douglas Aircraft Co., Long Beach, Calif.
Survivors include his wife, Helen M. Heitzman Gunning; and a sister, Helen Mitts of Bellevue.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 9:30 a.m. Monday at St. Francis deSales Church, Newport. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Ft. Thomas. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Ft. Thomas. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.
Mary Hall Hughes, 64, of Cincinnati, formerly of Newport, died Monday at University Hospital, Cincinnati. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include sons, James Hughes, Christopher Hughes, Karl Hughes and George Hughes, all of Cincinnati; daughters, Iris Hughes, Joyce Hughes and Karen Hughes, all of Cincinnati; brothers, Golden Hall of Newport and Johnny Hall of Sadieville; sisters, Jessie Hall Smith, Nancy Lamb, Joan Wright and Joyce Hall Lamb, all of Cincinnati; 17 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 7 p.m. Monday at Corinthian Baptist Church, Newport. Visitation will begin at 6 p.m. Monday at the church. Burial will be in Mary Smith Memorial Cemetery, Elsmere. Jones and Simpson Funeral Home, Covington, is handling arrangements.
Bernice Lilly Kannady, 59, of Dry Ridge, died Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center Grant County, Williamstown. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include her husband, Edsel Kannady; sons, Gerald Kannady and Danny Kannady, both of Dry Ridge, and Tim Kannady of Williamstown; a daughter, Sandy Taylor of Corinth; a brother, Ray Lilly of Dry Ridge; sisters, Juanita Russell and Linda Claypool, both of Williamstown, Virginia Northcutt and Christine Link, both of Crittenden, and Kathy Goins of Dry Ridge; 10 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

J.D. Lusty, 71, of Warsaw, died Thursday at his home after an extended illness. He was a retired carpenter with Local 698, Highland Heights. He was a World War II Army veteran and a member of Warsaw Lions Club, Good Guys Club and Henry Lindon VFW Post 11140.
Survivors include his wife, Raenelda Tucker Lusty; a daughter, Alfreida Lusty of Temple, Texas; sons, Barry Lusty of Falmouth, Anthony Lusty of Carrollton, and Lonnie Lusty and Jason Jones, both of Warsaw; a stepdaughter, Wanda Peck of Warsaw; a brother, James Lusty of Texas; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Virginia L. Ramler, 78, of Bromley, died at 2 p.m. Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Boniface & James Church, Ludlow. Her husband, Albert "Bud" Ramler, died in 1980. Survivors include a son, James Frilling of Taylor Mill; daughters, Billie Stark of Morning View and Patty Remley of Erlanger; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 12:30 p.m. Monday at St. Boniface & James Church, Ludlow. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to noon Monday at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow. Burial will be in St. John Cemetery, Ft. Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to St. Boniface & James Church, 304 Oak St., Ludlow, 41016.
Robert Alvin Tuel, 55, of Martinez, Calif., formerly of Germantown, died Thursday at his home. He was a retired bus driver for Amtrak. Survivors include a daughter, Linda Hatton of Winchester; a son, Robert A. Tuel Jr. of West Portsmouth, Ohio; his father, Robert W. Tuel of Brooksville; his mother, Louise Grimes of Vanceburg; and three grandchildren.
Arrangements are pending at Palmer Funeral Home, Germantown.
Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Germantown.
