Dolores Turner, nurse at St. Elizabeth
Dolores Faye Stewart Barr Turner of Covington was a "caretaker, " according to a son who said she faithfully helped, loved and protected her family, the patients she nursed - and anyone else who came to her in need.
"She was really loving and sweet, " said son William Barr of Covington. "She took care of the sick, her own father in her own home until he died a couple years ago.
"She was always giving. Her table always was open for anybody who was hungry."
Mrs. Turner died Sunday afternoon at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit in Covington. She was 64.
Mrs. Turner grew up in Newport. She was a homemaker until she needed to take a job outside her home to support her first two sons, William Barr and Lawrence Barr, now also of Covington.
Mrs. Turner briefly studied to be a telephone operator, but decided she wanted to work in a hospital instead. She worked more than 27 years at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North in Covington.
Hired as a nurse's aide, Mrs. Turner continued to work while she earned a nursing degree at Northern Kentucky Vocational School, now Northern Kentucky Tech, on Amsterdam Road in Covington. She retired in the early 1990s.
"She was the most compassionate nurse I've ever seen, " said son Lawrence Barr. "Mother was extremely compassionate to people with AIDS, minorities and gay people. She was always there for the underdog."
Mrs. Turner loved to collect dolls. Among her favorites were the old-fashioned porcelain kind with knobs on the head that turned to reveal three different faces, said William Barr. She also collected angel figures.
To Lawrence Barr, "My mother was an angel from heaven to me. "And now she's gone back to be with God and with the angels."
