Garner Hawkins, 93, ran hotel laundry room
His grandson will remember Garner "Hawk" Newton Hawkins sitting on the porch of his apartment on Pike Street in Covington, listening to Cincinnati Reds baseball games.
Or maybe he will remember him smoking his pipe on one of his many fishing trips, stalking catfish in the Ohio River or bass in a local pay lake.
Mr. Hawkins, who died Saturday at the age of 93, always had a story to tell, said his grandson, Michael Todd Hughes of Elsmere.
Sometimes he would talk about the many years that he supervised the laundry room at the Sheraton-Gibson Hotel in Cincinnati before he retired in 1975.
Sometimes he would talk about his first car, or how things had changed in Northern Kentucky since he was a boy.
Or maybe he would just tell a fishing story. "He was a good fisherman, " Hughes said.
Mr. Hawkins sometimes went to Keeneland in Lexington to see the horses race, and he often played the lottery. He won $1, 000 in a lottery during the 1980s, Hughes said.
After the death of his wife, Mary, his family put him into Carmel Manor nursing home in Fort Thomas, Hughes said. A daughter, Gloria Hughes, preceded him in death as well.
