Paul Sewell, active in church, businessman
Paul E. Sewell owned several small businesses throughout his life, but he was more proud of his work in the church.
Mr. Sewell taught Sunday school in Northern Kentucky and Cincinnati for 50 years and was a deacon at Hebron Baptist Church.
"His main thing has been his church and helping people, " said his wife, Marie. "He was not a joiner in clubs and lodges."
Mr. Sewell spent most of his life operating small groceries and a restaurant in Florence, Stringtown Restaurant.
His wife said the first owner of the restaurant came to him one day and said she couldn't handle it anymore. She asked if he had any desire to own a restaurant.
"He said 'No, but I might try it, ' so he did. He would just tend to try anything. If it didn't work, then OK."
Mr. Sewell, of Florence, died Wednesday at University Hospital, Cincinnati. He was 77.
He was also former owner of Dixie Meats, which closed several years ago.
Mr. Sewell was a Navy veteran of World War II.
Surviving in addition to his wife are sons, Gary Sewell of Apple Valley, Minn., and Jerry Sewell of Stevensville, Mont.; daughters, Paulette Sewell of Waterloo, Iowa, and Suzanne Sewell of Florence; a brother, Russell Sewell of Kettering, Ohio; and four grandchildren.
Services will be at 12:30 p.m. Friday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Resthaven Cemetery, Cincinnati. Memorials are suggested to Hebron Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 92, Hebron, Ky. 41048.
Jeffrey Arnett Acree, 47, of Verona, died Tuesday at his Parkland Apartments, Florence. He was a self-employed carpenter, a member of Walton Christian Church and an Army veteran.
Survivors include a daughter, Whitney Nicole Acree of Covington; his parents, Bob and Eloise Acree of Verona; a brother, Robin G. Acree of Florence; a sister, Lee Anne Ryan of Verona; and a grandmother, Mattie Arnett of Verona.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Hamilton-Stanley Funeral Home, Verona. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in New Bethel Cemetery, Verona. Memorials are suggested to Veterans Administration Medical Center, Cancer Research, 3200 Vine St., Cincinnati, Ohio 45220.
Leroy Ashcraft, 76, of Newport, died Tuesday at Veterans Administration Medical Center, Cincinnati. He was a self-employed carpenter and an Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include sons, Danny Ashcraft of Lebanon, Ohio, and Daryl Ashcraft of Elsmere; daughters, Diana Ashcraft of Las Vegas, Doris Beierlein of Richwood, Darlene Gilbert of Amelia, Ohio, and Donna Schroeder of Independence; stepsons, Charles "Sonny" Siebler of Newport and Larry Siebler of Southgate; a stepdaughter, Lynn "Happy" Siebler of Fort Thomas; a sister, Jo Harrison of Cincinnati; 19 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate. A.C. Dobbling and Son Funeral Home, Fort Thomas, is handling arrangements.
Charles Arthur Barrett, 75, of Thurmont, Md., died Wednesday at his home. He was a purchasing agent with Aerojet General Corp. and Litton Unit Handling Systems.
He was a past president of United Cerebral Palsy of Sacramento, Calif., and a member of Masonic Lodge No. 949, Florence. He was a former member of Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, Crestview Hills. A son, Ronald Philip Barrett, preceded him in death.
Survivors include sons, Michael Charles Barrett and Thomas James Barrett, both of Frederick, Md.; a brother, Rev. Ralph G. Barrett of Solomons, Md.; and two granddaughters.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Thurmont. Memorials are suggested to Redwood School and Rehabilitation Center, Remembrance Fund, 71 Orphanage Road, Fort Mitchell, Ky. 41017. Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger, is handling local arrangements.
Clarence Bauer, 67, of Maysville, died Tuesday at Meadowview Regional Medical Center, Maysville.
He was a member of Germantown United Methodist Church and an Army veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Diana Jolley Bauer; daughters, Violet Hedgecock of Germantown, Lois Wheeler and Cindy Gentry and Christy Rosenbaum, all of Maysville; brothers, Augustus Bauer Jr. of Minerva and Charles Bauer of Maysville; a sister, Emma Hord of Rectorville; and seven grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Germantown United Methodist Church. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday and from 10:30 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the church. Edward Borneman, 67, of Union, died Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence.
He was owner of Ed Borneman Buick and an Air Force veteran of the Korean War.
Survivors include his wife, Beverly Tipton Borneman; sons, Scott Borneman of Edgewood and William Borneman of Union; a daughter, Lisa Lung of Independence; stepsons, William Calhoun of Union and Michael Calhoun of Covington; brothers, William Borneman and Kenny Borneman, both of Indianapolis; and five grandchildren.

George P. Breithaupt, 72, of West Chester, Ohio, died Monday at a friend's house.
He was a teacher with Cincinnati Public Schools and a member of West Chester, Ohio, Presbyterian Church, the Cincinnati Teachers Union, Lebanon YMCA and Turners Athletic Club, Indianapolis.
Survivors include a son, Timothy Breithaupt of Oakley, Ohio; daughters, Terri Schimp of Edgewood and Cynthia Breithaupt of Nashville, Tenn.; a sister, Joan Creech of Indianapolis; and three grandchildren.

Leroy Brossart, 91, of Bellevue, died at midnight Wednesday at Carmel Manor, Fort Thomas.
He was a retired time clerk with Interlake Steel, Wilder.
His wife, Catherine Durkin Brossart, died in 1974.
Survivors include a daughter, Carol Henn of Bellevue; a son, Joe Brossart of Southgate; six grandchildren and a great-grandson.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Holy Spirit Church, Newport. Visitation will be from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Newport, followed by prayers. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas. Carolyn Rose Courtney, 61, of Glencoe, died Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.
She was a homemaker and a member of Glencoe Baptist Church.
Survivors include her husband, Jack Benny Courtney; daughters, Jackie Sargent of Warsaw and Cindy Flynn of Glencoe; and five grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Carlton-Lowder Funeral Home, Warsaw. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Glencoe Cemetery.
Henry G. Gieske, 99, of Lakeside Park, died at 3:45 a.m. Wednesday at his home.
He was a self-employed carpenter.
Survivors include his wife, Rosa M. Koelsch Gieske; sons, H. Carl Gieske of Edgewood, Bernard Gieske of Bowling Green, Walter Gieske of Fort Mitchell, John Gieske of Albuquerque, Paul Gieske of Michigan, Tom Gieske of West Chester, Ohio, and Bob Gieske of Crestview Hills; daughters, Rosemary Billman of Columbus, Ohio, and Angela Jolicoeur of Fort Mitchell; a sister, Lena Gieske of Germany; 52 grandchildren and 50 great-grandchildren.

Earl Howell, 91, of Newport, died Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.
He was a former restaurant owner, a former employee of White Castle, and an Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include a stepson, Charles Salyers of Burlington; a brother, Ray Howell of San Bernardino, Calif.; grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Burlington. Burial will be in Burlington Cemetery.
Patricia Lee Simpson Osborne Oldensmith, 90, of Covington, died Tuesday at St. Charles Care Center, Covington.
She was a homemaker, and a member of Lakeside Methodist Church of Lakeside Park.
Her first husband, James S. Osborne, died in 1989.
Her second husband, Charles Oldensmith, died earlier this year.
Survivors include sons, James G. Osborne of Crestview Hills, Stancil "Whit" Osborn of Florence, Robert E. Osborne of Louisville, Linda C. Beckman of Edgewood and David G. Osborne of Sadieville; three stepchildren, 15 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Memorial services will 1 p.m. Saturday at the chapel at St. Charles Care Center. Mrs. Oldensmith bequeathed her body to the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. Kearra Shatzer and Searra Shatzer, daughters of Chris Shatzer of Dayton and Tiffany Tierney of Florence, were stillborn Sunday at University Hospital, Cincinnati.
Other survivors include grandparents, Karen Shatzer of Dayton, Dennis Chinn of Dayton, Kimberly Tierney of Erlanger and Tony Gallichio of Newport; and great-grandparents, Rita Rietz of Newport, Bob Tierney of Erlanger, and Georgia Shatzer of Dayton.

Jerry Mitchell Waters, 41, of Dayton, died Tuesday at his home. He was a self-employed construction worker.
Survivors include a daughter, Christina Smith of Cincinnati; his mother, Patricia Jessee of Dayton; a sister, Jennifer Waters of Dayton; and a grandson.
Services will be at 8 p.m. Friday at Cooper Funeral Home, Grants Lick. Visitation will begin there at 5 p.m. Friday.
Alice L. Wells, 82, of Latonia, died at 4:30 p.m. Monday at Rosedale Manor, Latonia. She was a retired housekeeper. Her husband, Marvin O. Wells, died in 1991.
Survivors include daughters, Betty Jahnke of Jonesville, Eva Moore of Florence, Dorothy Gaston of Miami, and JoAnn Witt, Juanita Phillips and Alice Commodre, all of Covington; a son, Jackie Wells of Covington; 24 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild.
Services will be at 2 p.m. today at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington. Visitation will begin there at noon. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.
Lewis Wright, 82, of Wheelersburg, Ohio, formerly of Butler, died Wednesday at Greenbriar Healthcare Center, Wheelersburg.
He was a retired machinist with Cross Co., and a member of Church of God of Crescent Springs and Tri-City Sportsmen's Club.
His wife, Hazel Wright, preceded him in death.
Survivors include daughters, Teri Ann James and Marcia Louise Pike, both of Jacksonville, Fla.; stepsons, Brack Tucker and Ronald Tucker, both of Chiefland, Fla., and Bernie Tucker of Cleveland; a sister, Betty Wendling of Delhi, Ohio; grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
