The Rev. Louis R. Schmidt, priest and Air Force chaplain
The Rev. Louis R. Schmidt was a priest for more than half a century.
And although the Bellevue native never really said what prompted him to join the priesthood or whether he was glad he did, his attitude suggested he'd made the right decision, according to his sister, Mildred Wildeboer of Bellevue.
"He just seemed happy, " she said.
Rev. Schmidt, who had been living in retirement in Lexington, died Wednesday at Bluegrass Community Hospital in Versailles. He was 75.
Rev. Schmidt graduated from Covington Latin School and Villa Madonna College in Covington, St. Meinrad School of Theology in St. Meinrad, Ind., The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. and St. Vincent College in Latrobe, Pa.
He was ordained in 1954 and served as an Air Force chaplain during the Korean War.
Rev. Schmidt also served at St. John Church in Covington, Immaculate Conception in Newport, Holy Family in Ashland and Mary Queen of the Holy Rosary Church in Lexington.
In addition to Mrs. Boer, Rev. Schmidt is survived by a brother, Jerry Schmidt of Bellevue.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Divine Mercy Church in Bellevue.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday and from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday at the church.
Burial will be in St. John cemetery in Fort Mitchell.

Velma A. Bishop, 94, of Falmouth, died Thursday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas.
Arrangements are pending at Woodhead Funeral Home, Falmouth.
Paula J. Boeldt, 47, of Fort Mitchell, died Wednesday at her home. She was a homemaker, a member of Epworth United Methodist Church, Covington, and a volunteer with the Northern Kentucky Humane Society.
Survivors include her husband, Dale Boeldt; her parents, Juanita Hallman of Fort Mitchell and Gilbert Hallman of Punta Gorda, Fla.; and brothers, Gary Hallman of Villa Hills and Dr. Daryl Hallman of Middletown, Ohio.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Epworth United Methodist Church. Visitation will begin there at noon Saturday. Memorials are suggested to Epworth United Methodist Church, 1229 Highway Ave., Covington, Ky. 41011. Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow, is handling arrangements.
Paul Blake Burton, 17, of Cynthiana, died Wednesday at a residence in Harrison County. He was a cook for Kentucky Fried Chicken.
Survivors include his parents, Paul Randi Burton of Cynthiana and Martha Putzier Burton of Louisville; a brother, Benjamin Franklin Burton of Cynthiana; a sister, Ami Leigh Burton of Cynthiana; grandparents, Paul and Mary McKinley Burton of Cynthiana, and Neil and Mary Elizabeth Jefferson Putzier of Louisville.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Ware Home, Cynthiana. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Monday. Burial will be in Battle Grove Cemetery, Cynthiana. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of the Bluegrass, 508 E. Pike St., Cynthiana, Ky. 41031.
Rose Marie Holt, 69, of Petersburg, died at 1:40 p.m. Wednesday at her home. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Lewis Eugene Holt, preceded her in death.
Survivors include sons, Timothy Holt of Warsaw, Larry Holt of Covington, Joe Holt of Hamilton and Jeffrey Holt of Owenton; daughters, Susan Colyer and Barbara Stewart, both of Petersburg, Dorothy Butcher of Kissimmee, Fla., and Sandra Combs of Hamilton, Ohio; brothers, Henry Teeters of Florence and Stanley Teeters of Constance; 25 grandchildren and 30 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Hebron. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Burial will be in Petersburg Cemetery.
Dorothy C. Luke Marks, 65, of Covington, died Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington. She was a material handler.
Survivors include daughters, Rita Dozier and Carolyn Marshall, both of Cincinnati, Doris Hopkins of Erlanger and Margaret Lane of Newport; a son, Eugene Dozier of Covington; a brother, Steve Luke of Erlanger; sisters, Bernice Webb of Erlanger, Betty Parks of Cincinnati, Claudette Oden and Willa Mae Luke, both of Covington; 14 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church of Elsmere. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Mary Smith Cemetery, Elsmere. Jones, Simpson and Gee Funeral Home, Covington, is handling arrangements.
Bonnie Belle Butler Messmer, 95, of Verona, died Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center Grant County, Williamstown.
Arrangements are pending at Hamilton-Stanley Funeral Home, Verona.
Charles Ricky Renner, 49, of Ludlow, died Tuesday at his home.
He was a parts department worker with General Motors and a member of United Auto Workers Union Local No. 674, Cincinnati.
Survivors include sons, Chris Renner of Hebron, Austin Renner and Jacob Renner, both of Ludlow; his mother, Faye Timmerman of Ludlow; sisters, Diana White of Taylor Mill, Debbie Renner and Shelly Nelson, both of Ludlow, Cyndi Herring of Burlington and Sherry Cioffe of Independence.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow.
Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Saturday.

John J. Staubach, 87, of Newport, died at 11 a.m. Thursday at his home.
He was a retired technician with Gerdsen Heating and Air Conditioning Co. and Trailmobile Co., and a member of Lawler-Hanlon VFW Post No. 5662 in Newport, Catholic Order of Foresters, Corpus Christi Church Social Club and the Holy Name Society.
He was active in both Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts.
A daughter, Connie Staubach Heck, died in 1985.
Survivors include his wife, Matilda Kremer Staubach; sons, John Staubach of Highland Heights, Joseph Staubach of Newport, Thomas Staubach and Paul Staubach, both of Vero Beach, Fla.; a daughter, Rosemary Robison of Independence; brothers, Jerome Staubach of Highland Heights and Francis Staubach of Cincinnati; a sister, Mary E. Siemer of Cincinnati; and seven grandchildren.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Holy Spirit Church, Newport.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Newport.
Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas.
