Joan Reusch Baute, 'just the sweetest person in the world'
It only took a Reese's peanut butter cup and a Coke to make Joan Reusch Baute happy.
Eating the chocolate treat with a soda was a nightly ritual for the Lakeside Park resident. She had eaten the confections for as long as any of her family could remember.
For the record, the H.B. Reese Candy Company started making peanut butter cups in the 1920s.
Mrs. Baute, who died Tuesday at her home in Lakeside Park at age 68, liked her peanut butter cups fresh.
Even before the manufacturer started dating them, she could tell by the other coding how fresh they were and kept a stash of fresh ones for herself.
Peanut butter cups were one of the few treats that the 68-year-old reserved for herself.
"She went out of her way to do anything for anybody at any cost, " said her daughter, Pam Baute of Cincinnati. "She'd put herself out before she would do something for herself."
Someone might call to talk to one of her children and find himself talking to Mrs. Baute for 20 minutes, her daughter said. "I've had people who meet her and say, 'Oh my God, she is just the sweetest person in the world.'"
Mrs. Baute and her husband raised five children, then she worked in the cafeteria of Notre Dame Academy in Park Hills for about 16 years.
She spent most of her wages on her 11 grandchildren, her daughter said.
"She always wanted to have something for them when they came to her house, " she said.
She was diagnosed 15 years ago with breast cancer, and about five years ago she learned it had metastasized to her bones. She underwent radiation therapy and chemotherapy but never complained, even when she was in pain, Baute said..
Even when her health was declining, she helped care for her stepmother and fixed meals for Meals on Wheels.
She was famous for her long good-byes, and during the last few days of her life, she had the chance to bid farewell to everyone she needed to.
"I think she knew everyone who was important had come by to see her, " her daughter said.
