Ed Kelly, helped to liberate Nazi camp
As American soldiers sliced through the Nazi lines at the end of World War II, Ed Kelly -- who joined the Army right out of Simon Kenton High -- was part of the Seventh Army's 42nd Rainbow Division that helped discover a nightmare.
Kelly and his fellow soldiers helped liberate Dachau, the infamous Nazi concentration camp outside of Munich in April 1945.
After finishing his war service, Kelly returned to Kenton County where he and relatives began Latonia's Kelly Brothers Lumber Company.
Kelly, 77, died Wednesday while wintering in Florida, ending his 13-month battle with pancreatic cancer.
"He had 30 chemo treatments. It was intense, " said his daughter, Susan Cook, superintendent of Kenton County schools. "He was an extremely strong person. He loved life and he loved people and he just was not going to let this impact how he lived."
When he was diagnosed with cancer, Cook said, he was given three to six months to live.
After returning home from the war, Kelly began the lumber company with his brother and his father, the Rev. George Kelly, a Baptist minister.
"When he came back, " Cook said, "they were able to lease some of that ground where they are now from the railroad and just started transporting some lumber and it grew into a very, very successful business."
Kelly learned his work ethic, she added, from growing up on a farm on what is now Hands Pike, taking eggs, milk and chickens to Covington to sell. Kelly also was a deacon and Sunday school teacher with Latonia Baptist Church.
