Larry Rigg, respected furniture salesman
Larry Ross Rigg of Highland Heights was a successful furniture salesman in Newport and Covington for 29 years even though -- or perhaps because -- he always told customers the truth.
Brenda Flaugher Rigg, his wife of 40 years, said she'll always remember the time a Cincinnati Bengals football player came to her husband's store for some bar stools.
"He was huge, " she said, "and Larry told him, 'We have barstools, and I'll show them to you, but we don't have any bar stools that are going to hold up for you.'
"And the guy looked at the bar stools and said, 'You're right. These aren't for me.' "
Mr. Rigg died Saturday at his home. He was 64.
A native of Bracken County, Mr. Rigg served in the U.S. Air Force between 1957 and 1961, when he was forced to hang up his uniform because of a lung ailment he'd developed while stationed in England. He had to have a lung removed.
"He would have been a career man, " Mrs. Rigg said. "He really loved the Air Force."
Mr. Rigg would go on to sell furniture at three stores in Northern Kentucky -- Louis Marx Furniture in Newport, Tillman Furniture and Appliance in Covington and Value City Furniture in Latonia.
"He was honest. He would not sell cheaply made furniture, " his wife said.
"At the end of his sales career, he was serving the second generation. The husbands and wives would come in when they got married
and buy their furniture, and 20 years later their children -- their sons and daughters -- would come in with their spouse and buy their furniture.
"Customers followed him from store to store. Mr. Rigg retired eight years ago with a disability. When he contracted throat cancer three years ago, he had to give up his beloved hobby of golf.
"His favorite pastime was golf, " Mrs. Rigg said. "He had lots of friends and whenever they had the opportunity, they would get a foursome together and play golf.
"He was sad when he got throat cancer and thought he couldn't golf.
"But his friends would come and put him in a golf cart and take him around with them."
In addition to his wife, Mr. Rigg is survived by a daughter, Tammy Cook of Dallas; a son, Scott Rigg of Highland Heights; and a grandson, Garrett Austin Rigg, 11, of Greeley, Colo.
