William F. Cappel, 91, on world champion team
One word can hardly sum up 91 years of life, but the word "consistent" seems like a good one for the late William F. Cappel.
Mr. Cappel, who died Tuesday, lived his entire life in the same house on Perry Street in Covington.
He was a lifelong member of St. John's Roman Catholic Church, a devout Catholic and a very faith-filled man, said his niece, Barb Goebel of Edgewood.
Many people knew Mr. Cappel as the captain and second baseman for Nick Carr's Covington Boosters, the team that won the 1939 World's Amateur Softball Championship in Chicago.
A mural painted on the city's floodwall this year includes a reproduction of the team's victory photo.
"I could run like a deer in those days, " Mr. Cappel said in November 2002, after the city decided to name a new youth sports complex after him. "Now, I can barely walk."
Mr. Cappel donated the championship trophy he received, which was worth $1, 000, to the city, and it's on display in the recreation director's office.
His work with bats and balls didn't end with the world championship team, however.
Mr. Cappel was a member of the first graduating class of Covington Latin School in 1927.
He served in the Army for four years during World War II and was awarded the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star and five other medals.
From 1948 though 1958, Mr. Cappel served as the general manager for the city's ballparks. He worked seven days a week from 5:30 p.m. until midnight, without compensation.
Involved with women's softball as early as 1935, in the 1960s he started the Covington Major Girls League at Meinken Field. Three of his teams won national championships.
He co-founded the Northern Kentucky Umpire's Association, and umpired many games. He also co-founded the Northern Kentucky Sports Hall of Fame.
He organized many tournaments and leagues, including a "snowball tournament" in Cincinnati, when he umpired a game in sub-zero weather.
"In over 60 years, he never missed a game, a meeting or any scheduled assignment, " longtime friend Joseph Brennan said last year.
Another mark of his consistency was his practice of sending birthday cards to his 23 nieces and nephews. He never forgot to send a card, with a personal note, every year.
"The oldest is like 74 years old. For 74 years, he has sent birthday cards every year, " Goebel said.
Mr. Cappel never learned to drive. He either walked or caught rides, including to his day job. Initially he worked for the Union Pacific Railroad, then later for the Cincinnati Terminal Warehouse.
He would walk the streets of Covington, carrying a cane made from a baseball bat. Inside his jacket pocket, he carried a stack of articles clipped from local newspapers, Goebel said.
"I guess everyone in Covington would tell you, I don't think there's anybody he doesn't know, " she said. "I think everybody knows him."
He was a humble man, who gave generously to many organizations anonymously, his niece said.
He lived by himself until August, when he broke his hip and went into a nursing home. He was never able to get back on his feet after that, she said.
She said her uncle told a friend after the mural dedication in October that he'd done everything he wanted to do in his lifetime, and now it was time to go.
"He was ready to meet his maker, " she said.
