Marjorie Hoffman, 'a great person'
If every man had a mother-in-law like Marjorie Jackman Hoffman, there wouldn't be any more mother-in-law jokes.
That praise comes from Mrs. Hoffman's son-in-law, Steve Burbank of Crittenden. When he married
Mrs. Hoffman's only child, Audrey, he said he became like a son to Mrs. Hoffman.
"She was just a great person, " Burbank said.
Mrs. Hoffman, who died Wednesday at age 79, was raised in New Hampshire. She joined the Women's Army Corps in May 1944, and in the service met her husband, Leslie Ellis Hoffman Jr., who was in the Army Air Corps.
They lived in new England for a few years, and eventually settled in Florida. Mrs. Hoffman served as a homemaker most of her life.
Mr. Hoffman died in 1989 and, in 2001, Mrs. Hoffman moved to Crittenden to be close to her daughter.
She spent much of her time writing letters. She corresponded with many people, including a childhood friend in New Hampshire and some of her WAC friends, Burbank said.
"It was amazing, because she got stuff from all over the country, " he said.
