Duard 'DJ' Lawrence, decorated WWII veteran
Duard J. "DJ" Lawrence was a popular guy among his fellow condominium dwellers on Thomas Pointe Drive in Fort Thomas.
In 1996, he and his wife, Loraine, became the first residents to move into the condos, and Mr. Lawrence became a kind of one-man welcome wagon after that.
Other residents "affectionately called him the mayor of the condos up here, because he took care of things, " said his daughter, Denise Grause of Fort Thomas.
"He would bring in garbage cans and help out the neighbors.
"He would talk to prospective buyers. My mother said three people came to the door (after he died) and told her, 'We bought here because your husband was so nice'.
"He was just from the generation that Tom Brokaw called the 'Greatest Generation.' "
Indeed, what Mr. Lawrence didn't advertise among his neighbors was just how long he'd been putting other people first.
Mr. Lawrence was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II who'd won lots of ribbons and commendations for participating in many of the war's most dangerous and important initiatives. They included the invasion of Sicily, landings at Salerno and Anzio -- and the D-Day Invasion at Normandy, France, in 1944.
"He and my brother went (to France) on the 50th anniversary and he represented the Commonwealth of Kentucky at one of the ceremonies, " Ms. Grause said.
"It was very moving and very important to him.
"He loved God. He loved his country and he loved his family."
Mr. Lawrence died Christmas morning at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas. He was 80 years old.
Of course, Mr. Lawrence did a lot of living between his war years and his retirement years.
He worked 38 years for Cincinnati Bell, starting out as an installer and retiring as general personnel manager.
Mr. Lawrence also was a member of Christ Church United Church of Christ in Fort Thomas, Fort Thomas Masonic Lodge No. 808 F&AM and the Cincinnati Executive Association.
And he was a first-class family man, according to his daughter.
"He was a devoted father and husband and grandfather, " said Ms. Grause. "And he was a friend to all.
"He was just a wonderful person. Everybody respected him and respected his opinions, and he was respectful to other people as well."
In addition to his wife, -- to whom he was married
58 years -- and daughter, Mr. Lawrence is survived by sons Keith Lawrence of Alpharetta, Ga., and David Lawrence of Fort Thomas, and eight grandchildren.
