Jane Stevenson Zint, accomplished artist
Jane Stevenson Zint, an artist who captured the beauty of nature in her evocative landscapes and still lifes, died Saturday at the home of her sister in Cincinnati.
Ms. Zint, of Fort Thomas, had battled cancer for four years. She was 56.
She was one of Northern Kentucky's premier artists, and her work had a national following, said former Bellevue Mayor Tom Wiethorn, who has several Zint paintings.
"I fell in love with her work four or five years ago, when I was the successful bidder on a piece she did for Fresh Art at the Behringer-Crawford Museum, " Wiethorn said.
The Fresh Art program invited artists to spend the day painting in Devou Park and then auctioned their work to raise money for the museum. Ms. Zint was a frequent participant in the charity event.
She kept a studio in Cincinnati and also sold through several galleries, including the Rottinghaus Gallery in Hyde Park, the Risch Gallery in Fort Thomas and the Argosy Gallery in Bar Harbor, Maine.
Her paintings invited viewers to breathe the wild air and feel the sunshine and cool, clear water of a shadowy stream.
"Emotionally, she takes me to a different height. On a blue day, I look over my desk at two of her paintings. -- It just lifts my spirits, " said Wiethorn. "When I think there's too much ugliness in the world, I look above my desk and see what beauty there is. Jane showed you the beauty right in your own state, in your own country. She always looked at the beauty and made you stop and appreciate what you have."
He said Ms. Zint formed bonds with those who enjoyed her art.
Wiethorn would stop in her studio during open houses and once commented on a still life with a blue bowl and deep red berries.
"I ended up buying the painting, " he said.
When he went to pick it up, she was holding the blue bowl in her hand. "She said, 'Here, Tom, I want you to have this, too, '" Wiethorn said. "I don't know of any other artist who would do that."
Born in Lake Charles, La., Ms. Zint lived there until 1966, when her family moved to Houston, where she went to high school. She visited her sister, Betty Runck, in Cincinnati in 1970 and liked the area so much she decided to stay.
She studied art at the University of Cincinnati, where she also served as a housemother for Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority, said Runck, of Cincinnati's College Hill neighborhood. She also studied in North Carolina with a relative of noted American painter James Abbot McNeal Whistler.
Ms. Zint pained landscapes and still-lifes, but also sketched people beautifully, said her sister, Nancy Whittley of Anderson Township, Ohio.
She did most of her painting "plein air, " meaning that she went on location, set up shop outdoors and started painting.
The cancer started in her left eye as a melanoma on the retina, Whittley said. It was treated with a radioactive plate behind the eye, rather than removing the eye, because Ms. Zint wanted to save her sight.
The treatment worked for about two years, but then the cancer showed up in her lungs. She treated it through a diet she learned at the Gerson Institute in Tijuana, Mexico, which her family credited with extending her life.
Her eyesight did fade, but she never actually lost it. The worse it got, the better her painting became, Whittley said.
She became less interested in detail and more interested in subtle tones of light and shade.
"We saw a transformation, " Whittley said.
Ms. Zint also enjoyed gardening, a hobby that spurred a business for her and her husband, the late Jerry Zint. He developed a garden cart for her and patented the design. Together they turned the cart into a business -- Wheel-Around. They manufactured and sold the carts nationally.
Jerry Zint died of cancer in September.
