Charles 'Pat' DeHore, 83, found his niche
Roseanne DeHore always said of her brother, Charles Patrick "Pat" DeHore, that "he found a niche where there wasn't one."
"He made a real life for himself, " she said.
Mr. DeHore, who died Tuesday at 83, was mentally challenged. His sister served as his legal guardian for 60 years, and he lived most of his life with her in Ludlow.
His life revolved around the former Schrage's hardware and gift shop in Ludlow, where he worked as a clerk for 41 years. He did simple jobs such as deliveries, going to the bank or fetching lunch for the other employees.
"He never missed a day at the store, " his sister said. "It was his life. He just loved it, and they were very good to him."
His other passion was walking, usually dressed in his trademark suit and tie. He would walk around Ludlow for two or three hours a day, checking in with the local merchants.
"He would check the calendars at the businesses, " his sister said. "They wouldn't turn them until he came in."
Mr. DeHore served as the unofficial mayor of Ludlow, his sister said. "Everyone knew him and liked him, " she said.
He suffered a series of small strokes later in life, which affected his ability to walk. He spent his last three years at Rosedale Manor in Covington, where he also received great treatment, his sister said.
"He had many friends there, " she said. "He had a great disposition and a wonderful sense of humor."
