George Miller, WWII vet, devoted firefighter
It didn't matter what George C. Miller was doing at his Crescent Springs home. "All the siren had to do was blow, and he was gone, " said his widow, Vivian Miller.
Mr. Miller was a volunteer firefighter for the Crescent Springs Fire Department, and he really enjoyed it, his widow said.
Mr. Miller, who died Monday at 84, was also a founding member of the Crescent Springs Life Squad.
His daughter, Marion Banzhaf of Bridgetown, Ohio, remembered going with him to various county fairs, where he helped staff the American Red Cross first aid tent.
She also remembered him telling tales of his work with the life squad, including the time a plane crashed into the side of a hill, killing everyone aboard.
He talked of putting burned bodies into bags, she said. "He said it was really one of the worst things you can see, " she said. "And he had been in the war."
Mr. Miller was in the National Guard when World War II broke out. During the war, he served in the Army with the military police.
After the war, he worked in industrial sales, and then for 15 years as chief of security for the First National Bank in Cincinnati.
He served as a police judge in Crescent Springs for four years, hearing traffic cases and minor misdemeanors.
He and his wife were married
for 60 years, and lived in Crescent Springs in the same house for all but four of those years, his daughter said.
"He was a good man. We had a pretty long life together, " his widow said. "I know I'm going to miss him."
A son, Jerry Miller, preceded him in death.
