Joseph Muench, ex-Highland Heights councilman

Joseph Nicholas Muench Sr. was a goal-oriented person focused on making sure he did a good job and that his children helped him make the world a better place.

"He always said that one of the things that he was happy about the most was that his children were all helping other people in different ways, " said his daughter, Josie Cuda of Elkins, W.Va.

Mr. Muench, of Highland Heights and a native of Newport, died Saturday at age 78.

His family remembers him for the work he did helping others.

He served two terms as a Highland Heights City Council member during the 1960s and then served for five years as a police judge. He was known for creative sentences, such as making young people do community service instead of paying fines.

"Because most of the time, the parents paid the fine and the kids never learned anything, " Cuda said.

Mr. Muench served as a minister of the Eucharist at St. Joseph Church in Cold Spring. He also was active in the church's Holy Name Society, the Father DeJaco Council No. 5220 Knights of Columbus and the Fourth Degree Bishop Flaget Council Knights of Columbus.

During the 1950s, he served on the committee that initiated the church's first tithing campaign, and he gave a 10th of his own income to the church from then on.

He and his wife, Grace Whitlock Muench, helped organize or worked at several fund-raising events for the church and for Newport Catholic High School.

Mr. Muench supported youth football and raised money from the Monmouth Street merchants in Newport to send a team to Pennsylvania to play. He also co-sponsored a local softball team.

He served his country in the Navy during World War II as a communications officer on the U.S.S. Charles Hughes in the Mediterranean Sea.

Some knew him for his work in the retail furniture business. He managed the Marx Brothers stores in Covington and Newport, then Dine's Furniture Store in Newport, then ran his own store, Joseph's Furniture, a few years before his retirement.

Mr. Muench also served for 14 years as a member of the Campbell County Courthouse Commission, which supervises the care of the courthouse. During his tenure, major renovations were done to make the courthouse more accessible and restore some of its original architecture, Cuda said.

Besides his daughter, survivors include daughters, Barbara R. Kling of Wilder and Therese Blank of Alexandria; sons, Stephen R. Muench of Worchester, Mass., Richard A. Muench of Lawrence, Kan., and Rev. Joseph N. Muench of Harrodsburg; brothers, Raymond Muench of Southgate and Albert Muench of Nashville, Tenn.; 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph Church, Cold Spring. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Prayers will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas.

Memorials are suggested to St. Joseph School, 4011 Alexandria Pike, Cold Spring, Ky. 41076 or to the charity of the donor's choice.

A. Morris Cecil, 79, claims manager, married 57 years

When A. Morris Cecil was a little boy, his mother took him on a streetcar to a birthday party, where he met a girl named Margaret.

They became boyfriend and girlfriend in the eighth grade, and neither ever dated anyone else, even while Mr. Cecil served in the Army during World War II.

They were married when he returned home, and they stayed married for more than 57 years, until Mr. Cecil's unexpected death on Friday, just a day short of his 79th birthday.

"I've never seen a more devoted couple, ever, " said their daughter, Robin Slater of Basking Ridge, N.J. "They were just loving and caring until the very end."

Mr. Cecil had served as his wife's primary caregiver since her stroke four years ago.

"He stood by her through thick and thin. He took care of her every need. He said he wouldn't know what to do without her, " Slater said.

Mr. Cecil also was devoted to the Episcopal Church, and was in charge of fund-raising for the vestry at St. Andrew's Church in Fort Thomas.

He worked as a claims manager for the Pacific Mutual Insurance Co. After his retirement, he served as a director of the St. Luke Hospital Community Foundation, which he founded. He also served on the hospital's board of directors.

He also was a past president of the Holly Hill Children's Home in Campbell County.

Mr. Cecil played football in high school, and had a great love for the game. He stayed close to the game by officiating in the Northern Kentucky Football League for 20 years and for two years for the Continental Football League.

He and his wife had a large group of friends in Fort Thomas, where they lived, his daughter said.

"He was never the life of the party, but just a real solid citizen, someone you enjoyed talking to and who had a wonderful sense of humor, " she said. "He was a very honorable, principled man who a lot of people would come to for advice."
