Elsie Bartels, 'always put everyone else first'
Elsie M. Bartels was a very, very caring person who gave money to all kinds of organizations, said her niece, Mary Schmidt of Fort Mitchell.
"When you looked at her, she was very common, but she had a big heart, " Schmidt said.
Bartels, 88, of Southgate, who died Sunday evening at Carmel Manor in Fort Thomas, worked as a legal secretary for some of the region's most prominent attorneys, including Simon Leis and the late Morris Weintraub.
She visited Israel almost 30 years ago in a group with Weintraub and his wife and made a wish at the Wailing Wall that Schmidt would have a child.
"And now, my child is 27 years old, " Schmidt said.
Mrs. Bartels belonged to several senior citizens groups, including Golden Age and the Bellevue Christian Neighbors.
She taught Sunday school at St. John's United Church of Christ in Newport and was a member of the Lawler-Hanlon VFW Post Ladies Auxiliary in Newport.
She had a keen sense of humor, and always had a comeback to whatever was said to her, Schmidt said.
Her husband, Charles Bartels, died in 1961. They didn't have any children, so she became a second mother to Schmidt and her sister, Joanne Winstel of Hebron.
"I don't think words could even describe her, " Winstel said. "She was very loving. She always put everyone else first."
