Joseph G. Schadler, 70, cement mason

Joseph George Schadler spent his life caring for others -- from the dogs he passed on his walks to elderly neighbors. But his first love was his family.

Mr. Schadler, 70, a retired cement mason from Florence, died Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital West in Florence, after he collapsed at his home on Monday.

Mr. Schadler started working as a cement mason at C.V. Maescher Construction in Cincinnati just after he got out of the Army and worked there for nearly 40 years.

"He was a very strong man on the exterior, but a very gentle man on the interior, " said his daughter, Kristy Williams of Fayetteville, N.C. "Even when I was older, I could take problems to him, and he always knew what to say to make me feel better.

"My father taught us to always be honest. He wanted us to be good to older people and to cherish the friendships we develop. He said if we go to our grave with one friend, we've done well. My father had so many friends."

Mr. Schadler was a strong church member and went to Mass three or four times a week, said his wife, Karen Unkraut Schadler.

"He would take Bonz (dog biscuits) for the dogs he'd pass on the way, " she said. "He always had a pocket full of Bonz for the dogs."

He retired in 1986, but he kept busy with family, friends and church. On snowy mornings, Mr. Schadler would be out plowing his neighbors' driveways and sweeping their walks.

If someone was sick or couldn't get out, Mr. Schadler was there to help.

"He was a good family man. He loved his children. We did everything together, " Karen Schadler said.

On Monday he collapsed at home with a stomach aneurysm. He died the next day following surgery.
