Riley, William 'Bill', age 83 of Hudson died Jan. 28, 2002

William E. ‘Bill’ Riley, age 83 of Hudson, WI died at the Christian Community Home in Hudson on January 28, 2002. He was born on July 4, 1918 in Minneapolis, Mn, and the son of Leo and Ann (Ryan) Riley. He attended grade school and graduated from DeLaSalle Hugh School in Minneapolis. He was united in marriage to Florence Harwell on January 10, 1942 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Hudson. She preceded him in death in 1979. While living in Hudson from 1942 to 1969, he worked at the Hudson Lumber Company. In 1969, they moved to Fridley where he worked for Sim’s Hardware Store in Minneapolis. In 1976, they lived in Spring Valley, WI while working at Stillwater Manufacturing in the Millworks and Lumber Dept. He retired in 1981. After retirement, he was the caretaker at 77 Coulee Road Apartments until his stroke in 1985 at which time he became a resident of the Christian Community Home in Hudson. Bill was a gifted woodworker and carpenter. He enjoyed dancing, music, fishing and traveling with his fifth wheel camper spending their winters in Florida. He was a wonderful father, grandfather and great grandfather and his memory will live on by the lives he touched. He is survived by daughters Sharon (Melvin) Burton of St. Paul, MN, Kathleen (Jack) Kusilek of Hudson, sister Sister Marion Riley (Sister of St. Joseph’s Order) of St. Paul, MN, brothers Robert (JoAnn) Riley of Shoreview, MN, Philip (June) Riley of Minneapolis, MN, 5 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by parents, wife Florence, sister Katie Hall and brothers James, Lawrence and Joseph. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 AM Thursday January 31, 2002 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Hudson with Father Ryan Erickson, organist Mary Post, vocalist Adele Dolan and Violinist Lori Bernard. Visitation will be 5 to 8 PM Wednesday January 30 at O’Connell Family Funeral Home in Hudson with a prayer service at 7:45 PM. Interment will be at St. Patrick’s cemetery with active casketbearer being John Kusilek, Joseph Kusilek, Fred Harwell, David Peterson, Camie Abel and Jodie Robey. Memorials are preferred. Graf, William, Age 91 of Baldwin died Jan. 26, 2002

Obituary for William Graf William ‘Bill’ Graf, age 91 of Baldwin, WI and formerly of Hammond, WI died on January 26, 2002 at the Baldwin Care Center in Baldwin. Bill was born on September 16, 1910 in Minneapolis, Minnesota; the son of William and Bertha (Lohman) Graf. Bill was baptized at Trinity Lutheran Church in Minneapolis, MN. and was confirmed at St. Matthew’s Church in Almena, Wisconsin. He attended school in Poskin, Wisconsin. On August 25, 1935, he was united in marriage to Alice Mathilde Quick at Central Lutheran Parsonage in Minneapolis. This union would be blessed with five sons; Wallace, Richard, Kenneth, Lawrence, and Donald. After their marriage, they lived in Minneapolis for a short time. They would move to St. Peter where they would farm on Alice’s homeplace. In 1954, they moved to Hammond where they farmed south of town for many years. In 1962, they moved into the village where Bill worked for the school until his retirement in 1976. His retirement didn’t last long. He began working as custodial for Gethsemane Lutheran Church until his true retirement in 1985. Following this, the Graf’s moved to Baldwin. In 1996, Alice preceded him in death. Bill loved the craftsmanship of woodworking. He enjoyed the challenge of making furniture such as cabinets or crafts such as beds for Cabbage Patch Dolls. He was also as past member of the Hammond Lions Club. Survived by sons Wally (Merna) Graf of Baldwin, Dick (Melita) Graf of River Falls, Ken (Marcia) Graf of Woodville, Larry (Bev) Graf of Woodbury and Don (Rockie) Graf of Roberts, 17 grandchildren, 40 great grandchildren and 1 great, great granddaughter. Sister’s Marie Molitor, Pauline Kohl and brother Lawrence preceded him in death. Funeral services will be Tuesday January 29, 2002 at 11:00 AM at Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Baldwin with Pastor Paul Lovestrand officiating, organist Faye Bergin, vocalist Clarence Urtel and special music by granddaughter Jill Graf. Visitation will be Monday January 28 from 4 to 8 PM at Gethsemane Lutheran Church. Interment will be in Hammond cemetery with active casketbearers being Kevin, Graf, Kory Graf, Wally Graf, Rick Graf, Todd Graf and Wesley Quick. Memorials are preferred to American Heart Association, American Cancer Society, Gethsemane Lutheran Church, and Candles for Eternal Flame. Funeral services are entrusted to the O’Connell Family Funeral Home in Baldwin, WI 715-684-3434.

Ohrt, Steven, age 49 of Hudson died Jan. 22, 2002

Steven Vern Ohrt, age 49 of Hudson, WI died on January 22, 2002 at Hudson Medical Center from complication from cancer. Steve was born on May 25, 1952 in St. Paul, MN, and the son of Vern and Shirley (Tobias) Ohrt. He attended grade school and graduated from Hudson high school. He went on to the University of Wisconsin River Falls working towards his Bachelor of Science degree. He also received certifications for Emergency Medical Technician, Firefighter I and Police Officer Training. He was united in marriage to Vicki Radke on October 22, 1977 at Ascension Episcopal Church in Stillwater, MN. Steve worked for Consolidated Lumber Co. (now Arrow Building Center) and for River Falls Sanitation. Besides his family, Steve devoted his life to emergency services. He worked security and emergency room technician at Hudson Medical Center. After receiving certification, he worked as a police officer first, for Robert Police Dept. then St.Croix County Sheriff’s Dept. and No. Hudson Police Dept. He also volunteered many hours with St. Croix Emergency Medical Services in Hudson (1978 to 1985) and was a current member of the Hudson Fire Dept. at the time of his illness. He started with the fire dept. in 1975 and was awarded ‘Firefighter of the Year’ for 2002. Steve’s years of dedicated service and commitment for the betterment and safety of our communities will not be forgotten and his memory will live on. Steve also enjoyed softball; coaching and playing hockey, fishing and hunting particularly bow hunting. He is survived by wife Vicki, children Matthew and Elizabeth ‘Betsy’, mother Shirley Ohrt, sisters Debra (James) McPhetres, Rebecca (Randy) Weiss all of Hudson, brother Tom (Sharon) Ohrt of Eleva, WI, father-in-law Lowell Radke and brother-in-law Randy (Rebecca) Radke all of Stillwater along with many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by grandparents, father Vern Ohrt and mother-in-law Valerie Radke. Funeral Services will be 10:00 AM Saturday January 26, 2002 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hudson, WI with Pastor Mark Tewes officiating, organist Jan Fredrick and music by Steve’s cousin’s the Murtha’s. Visitation will be 5 to 8 PM on Friday at O’Connell’s Family Funeral Home in Hudson. Interment Willow River cemetery with active casketbearers being J. P. Knopps, Aldon Forsythe, Bill Wanner, Gary Svenningsen, Greg Grass and Rick Meissner. Memorials are preferred. ROULEAU, WILLIAM of Lake St. Croix Beach died Jan. 22, 2002

Wm. J. Rouleau, age 79 of Lake St. Croix Beach, MN died suddenly at his residence on January 22, 2002. He was born on December 8, 1922 in St. Paul, Mn, and the son of Eugene and Florence (McCann) Rouleau. He attended St. Mark’s Catholic grade school and graduated from Mechanic Arts high school. He went on to attend Minneapolis Vocational School for diesel Mechanics. In December of 1942, he enlisted in the Army Air Force during WWII and was honorably discharged on December of 1945 at the rank of Sergeant. Other duties were under his classification as Air Transport Commander. He returned to the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities working towards a bachelor’s Degree. In May of 1951, he was called to duty during the Korean Conflict and was discharged at the rank of Staff Sergeant in June of 1952. He was united in marriage to Lois Buchanan on April 2, 1948 at St. Mark’s Catholic Church in St. Paul. After the war, William worked for Mayflower Transportation for a short time and in 1961, he had the St. Paul Pioneer Press newspaper distribution in Hudson. In 1966, he was self-employed as a private investigator and from 1976 to his retirement in 1984, he was Homicide Inspector for the Attorney’s Office in Hennepin County, He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting and fishing. After retirement, he took up gardening and raising butterflies. He was an active member of the American Legion and a proud member of Alcoholics Anonymous with over 50 years of Sobriety. William is survived by his wife of 53 years Lois, Children Bill Rouleau and Cathy (Ben) Chavez both of Lake St. Croix Beach, Teresa (Steve) Haugen of Virginia Beach, VA, Fran (Richard) Jacobs of Lakeville, MN, Nick (Diane) Rouleau of White Bear Lake Twsp. John (Jani) Rouleau of Castro Valley, CA, Jeanne (Chet) Gilbert of No. Hudson, Jim (Kerry) Rouleau and Tim Rouleau both of Hudson, 10 grandchildren sister Audrey (Don) Erickson of St. Paul. His parents and one son Richard and brothers Eugene and Harry Rouleau preceded him in death. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 1:00 PM Friday Jan. 25 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Lake St. Croix Beach with Father James Dabruzzi officiating, organist Roger Burg and vocalist Joseph Reed. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 PM and a prayer service at 7:45 on Thursday Jan. 24 at O’Connell Family Funeral Home in Hudson. Private family interment with active casketbearers being William’s sons Bill, Nick, John, Jim and Tim. Memorials are preferred. Butler, Lucile, age 92 of Hammond died Sunday January 20, 2001

Lucile Butler, Age 92 of Hammond, Died Sunday Night January 20, 2001 at the American Heritage Care Center in Hammond. Mass of Christian Burial is 11:00am. MITTL, LILLIAN of Hudson died Jan. 13, 2002

Lillian “Lil” Mittl, age 81 of Hudson died Sunday night, January 13, 2002 at the Christian Community Home in Hudson. Lil was born on March 7, 1920 in Clinton, Iowa; the daughter of Andrew and Bessie (Anderson) Larson. She received her education in St. Croix Falls. On February 7, 1942, she was united in marriage to Emil Mittl in Chicago, Illinois. Shortly after their marriage Emil enlisted in the Armed Forces. Lil moved to Cumberland to be near her parents. While Emil was still in the Armed Forces, she moved to Hudson in 1945. She worked for her stepfather, Fred Gamer who owned Gamer’s Bar. Emil returned from the service and they would raise their family in Hudson. Although Lil was a devoted homemaker, she worked as a waitress for the Badger Room in Hudson and then Sam’s in North Hudson. She enjoyed playing bingo and socializing with friends. She also appreciated the beauty of outdoors and enjoyed spending time outside. Lil is survived by her children Judi (Robert) Jensen of Hudson, Carla (Robert) Garrett of Anoka, MN., S. James (Carol) Mittl of Hammond, Kathy (Scott) Anderson of Hudson, Bob (Debbie) Mittl of Southlake, TX., Tom Mittl of Tom’s River, NJ., Mike Mittl of Hudson, 16 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, and brother Glenn Larson of Palos Verdes, Ca. She is preceded in death by her parents, stepfather Fred Gamer, husband Emil, infant daughter Mary Jane, and stepsister Blanche Groecki. Funeral service for Lillian Mittl will be 1:00PM Wednesday January 16 at the O’Connell Family Funeral Home in Hudson. Officiating is Father James Dabruzzi of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church. Burial will be in the St. Patrick’s Catholic cemetery in Hudson. Visitation is from 11AM to 1PM prior to the service at O’Connell on Wednesday. Memorials preferred. Funeral services were entrusted to the O’Connell Family Funeral Home of Hudson.

SPENCER, SHIRLEY AGE 79 OF HUDSON DIED JAN. 10, 2002

Shirley A. Spencer, age 79 of Hudson, WI died at her residence on Jan. 10, 2002. She was born on April 17, 1922 in Baldwin, WI, the daughter of Walter and Clara (Engebretson) Zentzis. At a young age, they moved to Hudson where she received her education. She was united in marriage to George Spencer on April 17, 1940 in St. Paul, MN. She was a waitress for Charlie Baker in Hudson and later, worked as a sales clerk at Schultz Brothers Five and Dime Store in Hudson. When the children were born, she became a homemaker. Shirley cherished the time she spent with her family and friends. She was active with the church bazaars and also enjoyed baking, playing cards and traveling. She is survived by husband George, sons David (Lila) Spencer of Hudson, Donald (Carol) Spencer of Oakdale, Michael Spencer of Hudson, grandchildren Dawn Spencer of Hudson, Theresa Spencer of New Richmond, Lisa Spencer of St. Paul, Tammy (Edward) Payton of River Falls and Carrie (Brian) DeLoy of Star Prairie, great grandchildren Travis Spencer, Bailey and Miranda LaFavor, Zachary Glassing, Garrett and Courtney DeLoy, sister Arlyce Boe of Freehold, NJ, brothers Roger (Eileen) Zentzis of St. Paul, Richard Zentzis of Shelton. WA, Earl (Terry) Zentzis of Valdosta, GA. She was preceded in death by parents, brothers Lyle Zentzis, Walter Jr. Zentzis and an infant brother, sisters Bernice Schirmer and Marjorie Ulrick. Funeral Services will be 2:00 PM Saturday Jan. 12, 2002 at O’Connell Family Funeral Home in Hudson with Pastor Michael Ida officiating and music provided by Cheryl Forester. Visitation will be from 12:00 to 2:00 PM before services at O’Connell’s. TeGrootenhuis, Anita retired Baldwin school teacher died Thursday morning, January 10.

Anita TeGrootenhuis, age 89 of Baldwin, died early Thursday morning, January 10, 2002 at St. Joseph’s Hospital in St. Paul. Anita was born on February 23, 1912 in New Richmond, Wisconsin; the daughter of Samuel and Ella (Schumucher) Sette. Anita attended elementary school and graduated from the New Richmond High School. She received her teacher’s certificate from the Teacher’s College in River Falls and began teaching in rural schools in St. Croix County such as Carr Creek, Happy Valley, Hop Yard, and Prairie View to name a few. While teaching, she furthered her education at the Church College in Naperville, Illinois. Many knew “Mrs. TeGrootenhuis” as their first grade teacher in Baldwin. On June 17, 1942, she was united in marriage to Wallace TeGrootenhuis in New Richmond. The couple lived in the village of Baldwin for many years. Besides being a respected schoolteacher, she served as a civic leader in the Baldwin community. She served as the chairwomen of the Baldwin Chapter of the American Red Cross. Furthermore, she assisted and coordinated countless fund-raisers and programs for the Baldwin American Legion Auxiliary where she served as past president. She was a member of the Retired Teacher’s Association and was active with local county and District #10 school districts. She enjoyed reading, playing cards, entertaining friends and guests, and was a member of the Riverside Homemaker’s Club. Anita is survived by her sister Erna Sette of Baldwin brother Ralph (Doris) Sette of New Richmond, niece Barbara (Robert) Dempsey, nephew Gary Sette, brother and sister-in-law Neil (Alice) TeGrootenhuis, and several cousins, great nieces, nephews, and friends. She is preceded in death by her husband Wallace, infant brother, brother Merton, niece Claire Harmon. Funeral service for Anita TeGrootenhuis will be 2:00PM Saturday, January 12, 2002 at the First Reformed Church in Baldwin. Officiating is Roger Lokker. Organist Kris Wellens accompanied congregational singing. Burial will be in the Baldwin Cemetery. Active casketbearers will be Greg Zwald, Brian Ewing, Doug Thompson, Ken Nygaard, Dr. Ray Price, Richard Kruschke, and Harlan Vehrs. The Baldwin American Legion Auxiliary served as honorable casketbearers as they were as special part of her life. Visitation is on Friday from 5 until 8Pm at the O’Connell Family Funeral Home in Baldwin and one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday. Memorials may be directed to the donor’s choice.

Hayne, Linda age 54 of White Bear Lake, MN died January 10.

Linda Lee (Kasal) Hayne, age 54 of White Bear Lake on Jan. 10, 2002 and is now in peace after a courageous battle with cancer. ‘Daughter, your faith has made you well. Go in peace and be healed of your affection.’ Mark 5:34. preceded in death by father Archie Kasal and son Jeffrey Hayne. Survived by her mother Wilma Kasal, W. St. Paul, Loving husband Ralph, beloved daughter Brenda, brothers and sisters-in-law Paul and Linda Hayne, White Bear Lake, Lenore (Hayne) and Bob Weber, Vadnais Heights, Sheryl Hayne, St. Paul, Nieces and nephews Eric and Kara Hayne, Shannon (Hayne) and Nate Urfer both of Moundsview, Ryan and Andrea Weber and many special friends and relatives. She touched all our lives with her warmth, beautiful voice and many fond memories. “Though I will know the joy of solitude, I’ll never be alone. I’ll be embraced by all the family and friends I’ve ever known. Krause, Ruby age 89 of MPLS, formerly Colfax, died on Thursday, April 4, 2002.

Ruby Eva Krause, 89, formerly of Colfax, passed away Thursday April 4, 2002 at Abbott Northwestern in Minnesota. Ruby was born November 13, 1912 in Norcross, Minnesota the daughter of Rudolph and Annie (Shrankel) Klink. On January 2, 1934 she married Dr. Gustavus Krause in St. Paul, Minnesota. She worked as a model, an elevator operator, sales clerk and cook in a nursing home; she enjoyed gardening, fishing, and colleting teddy bears. She was preceded in death by her parents, and step-father Otto Moe, husband Dr. Gustavus Krause, daughter-in-law Carol Krause, brother Joseph Klink. Survivors are her sons David (Judy) Krause of Baldwin, Grant Krause of Minneapolis, MN; grandchildren Douglas (Melanie) Krause of Madison, WI, Jennifer Krause of Minneapolis, MN; great grandchildren Braedon and McKenna Krause. Funeral service was 1:30 PM, Saturday April 6, 2002 at O’Connell Family Funeral Home in Baldwin. Pastor Keith Anderson officiated. Music was offered by Billie Krause. Burial to be in Evergreen Cemetery, Colfax, WI. Casketbearers were Douglas Krause, Jennifer Krause, Angela Pries, Jason Giesen, Judy Beachamp and Edward Christy, honorary casketbearers being Braedon Krause and McKenna Krause. Visitation was one hour prior to service time at the funeral home. Funeral services were entrusted to O’Connell Family Funeral Homes in Baldwin and Hudson, Wisconsin.

Josephine Madden age 94 of North Hudson died Easter Sunday at the American Heritage Care Center in Hammond. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10AM Saturday April 6 at St. Patricks Catholic Church in Hudson. Burial is in Elroy, Wisconsin. Visitation is on Friday from 5 until 7PM at the OConnell Family Funeral Home in Hudson.
