Genevieve Reimer, Kenton Lakes owner
Genevieve Hehner Reimer first came to rural Kenton County as a newlywed with her husband, Charles, in 1938.
Their plan was to go into the pay lake business.
They bought a chunk of the old Armstrong estate on Ky. 177, a tract with a half-dozen silvery lakes teeming with bass, catfish and bluegill, and set up a bait shop at one end of the property.
Their son, Charles "Buck" Reimer of Independence, remembers driving 16 hours up to Lake Erie and back, hauling truckloads of fish to stock the ponds at the family enterprise that came to be known as Kenton Lakes.
One of Mrs. Reimer's jobs was to sell chicken livers and nightcrawlers to the people who would come by in the mornings to wet a line -- or more likely, a half-dozen lines.
Over the years, she became an institution in southern rural Kenton County, from Visalia to Morning View to White Villa and beyond.
"Every day, she was up at 6:30 in the morning, waiting for the fishermen to come, and she'd go strong from morning until dark, " said her other son, Gary Reimer of Kenton.
"She loved meeting people, and she loved running the lakes."
Mrs. Reimer continued to run Kenton Lakes on her own after her husband died in 1988 at the age of 78.
She continued to run the business until the middle of last month, when ill health forced her hospitalization.
She died Friday at the age of 85.
Buck Reimer said his mother also was "an absolute flaming Kentucky basketball fan."
"But in all those years, she never was able to go to a UK game because she and dad wouldn't leave the lakes -- it was a seven-day-a-week business, " he added.
She will be buried in a UK sweatshirt, in a casket that is UK blue.
Mrs. Reimer was one of the original volunteers at the Kenton Fire Department and formerly worked on the life squad there.
Surviving in addition to her sons are a sister, Mildred Williams of Erlanger, nine grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren, with another on the way.
