William Foutch, was teacher, principal and superintendent
William Curtis Foutch loved children, and he made a career of education.
The Alexandria resident, who died Thursday at age 70, worked for the Campbell County public schools from 1955 to 1982 as a high school teacher, counselor, associate superintendent and high school principal.
He also served as a superintendent for the Ashland Independent Schools from 1982 to 1993 and was a past president of the Eastern Kentucky Superintendents Association.
After he retired, he returned to Northern Kentucky and taught education classes at Northern Kentucky University, as well as supervising student teachers.
He had a doctorate in education from the University of Cincinnati.
Mr. Foutch was born in Benham, in the heart of Harlan County coal-mining country. He lived there until he went to Cumberland College, where he met his future wife, Lois Foutch. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Jan. 1.
He always made time for his family, and coached his sons' Knothole Baseball team for 15 years. He enjoyed camping, and his favorite camping spot was Cades Cove in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.
He served in several community organizations, such as the Rotary Club, and was a deacon of the Main Street Baptist Church in Alexandria.
He was an easygoing man whom nothing seemed to upset much, said his son, David Foutch of Butler. "I couldn't ask for a better dad."
Survivors include his wife, Lois Barger Foutch; sons, Daniel Foutch of Ashland and David Foutch of Butler; his mother, Eva Foutch of Cumberland; brothers, James B. Foutch of Alexandria and John D. Foutch of Barbourville; and 10 grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Main Street Baptist Church, Alexandria.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Alexandria Funeral Home and from 10 a.m. Monday until the time of services at the church. Burial will be in Alexandria Cemetery.

Mary Ann Ashcraft, 70, of Williamstown, died Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center Grant County, Williamstown. She was a switchboard operator.
Survivors include her husband, Joseph Lee Ashcraft; a stepson, Donald Joe Ashcraft of Richmond, Ind.; a stepdaughter, Linda Jones of Dayton; brothers, Roy E. Sinkovich of Nashville, Tenn. and John Sinkovich of Loxahatchee, Fla.; a half-brother, Flint Manning of Belleview, Fla.; sisters, Nell Catevenis of Gainesville, Fla., and Helen Sinkovich of Belleview, Fla.; a half-sister, Jeanetta Manning both of Belleview, Fla.; a half-sister, Alice Manning of Atlanta; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Williamstown. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Williamstown Cemetery.

Kenneth Charles Ashford, 54, of Bellevue, died Thursday at St. Luke Hospital east, Fort Thomas.
He was a laboratory technician.
Survivors include a daughter, Heather Fite of Erlanger; her mother, Edna Carper of Bellevue; sisters, Cynthia Barrett of Dayton, Lois Slone of Beattyville, Betty Norton of Bellevue and Lisa Haines of Fort Thomas; and a brother, Dennis Ashford of Dayton.

Mildred L. Bates, 87, of Covington, died Jan. 2 at the Anderson Nursing Home, Cincinnati.
She was a homemaker. Her husband, Irvin Bates, preceded her in death.
Survivors include a son, John Bates of Covington; and a sister, Ruth Scott, of Arizona.

William Earl Bowling, 78, of Cincinnati, died Thursday at his home.
He was a retired employee of Wiedemann Brewing Co., Newport, and an Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Betty J. Massey Bowling; stepdaughters, Janet Keaton of Harrison, Ohio, Rebecca Chalfant, Cynthia Alcorn and Marie Wright, all of Cincinnati; a stepson, Robert Massey of Cincinnati; a sister, Eula Mae Eversole Kash of Taylor Mill; brothers, Rudell Bowling of Covington, Parnell Bowling of Newport and Rev. Lowell Bowling of Taylor Mill; 16 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

Leo Raymond "Dutch" Broering, 48, of Baton Rouge, La., formerly of Covington, died in an automobile accident Tuesday in Baton Rouge.
He was a site manager and chemical engineer with Shell Oil Co., was a member of the board of directors of Capital Area United Way, the Academic Distinction Fund and the Louisiana Alliance for Education Reform. He served as chairman of the board of the Louisiana Chemical Association.
Survivors include his wife, Claire Broering; a son, Greg Broering; a daughter, Ellen Broering; his parents, Leo and Norma Broering of Fort Wright; and sisters, Beth Broering of McLean, Va., and Carol Allison of Fort Wright.

Douglas W. Dawson, 22, of Butler, died Thursday in Pendleton County.
He was a diesel mechanic for Travel Center of America.
Survivors include his mother, Cathy Dawson of Butler; sisters, Donna Stewart and Diane Dawson, both of Butler; grandparents, MerrilDawson of Butler, and Milton and Dollie Robinson of Butler; and fianc�, Ashley Stinson of Falmouth.

Joseph J. Dischar, 63, of Alexandria, died at 4:45 p.m. Thursday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington.
He worked for the Kroger Co., Cold Spring, and was a former employee of Fuller Ford, Cincinnati.

Richard L. Ellis, 78, of Latonia, died at 8:50 a.m. Friday at Rosedale Manor, Latonia. He was a retired ironworker with Stewart Iron Work and an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II. His wife, Alberta Ellis, died in 1997.
Survivors include sons, Danny Ellis of Cold Spring and John Ellis of Lexington; daughters, Kathleen Ellis and Linda Vance, both of Latonia, and Melissa Schulkens of Alexandria; a brother, Henry Fuller of Fort Thomas; a sister, Irene Adams of St. Augustine, Fla.; eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Edward Herman Engel, infant son of Randall and Shawna G. Engel of Memphis, Tenn., died Wednesday in Memphis.
Other survivors include a sister, Maxine B. Engel of Memphis; grandparents, Bonnie and Richard Engel of Hampshire, Ill., and Sharon and Edward Gastright of Cold Spring; and great-grandparents, Donald Engel of Hampshire and Raymond Saner of Bellevue.

John William Grant Jr., son of John William Grant and Kathleen Murray of Newport, was stillborn Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital, Fort Thomas.

Edward J. Hackman, 78, of Lakeside Park, died Thursday at his residence. He was a bank officer for First National Bank, Cincinnati, a volunteer ambassador at Cincinnati-Northern Kentucky International Airport and an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Hazel W. Hackman, and a brother, Charles Hackman of Cincinnati.

Ethel Frances Wayman Hatfield, 90, of Hereford, Ariz., formerly of Independence, died Thursday at Life Care Center, Sierra Vista, Ariz. She was a retired secretary with Rel C. Wayman and Associates and a member of Sierra Vista, Ariz. United Methodist Church. Her husband, Gerald Hatfield, died in 2000.
Survivors include a son, Jerry Hatfield of Hereford; a sister, Mildred Thomas of Crescent Springs; two grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Vincent Hobbs, 80, of Berry, died at 10:10 p.m. Thursday at his home.
He retired from the former Fisher Body Co. in Hamilton, Ohio, and was a member of the United Auto Workers Union. He was an Army veteran of World War II. A son, Gaffie Hobbs, preceded him in death.

Dorothy "Dottie" Mullins, 78, of Latonia, died at 1:10 a.m. Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was a retired owner of Dot's Pike Street Pub and formerly the 845 Bar, Covington. Her husband, Howard Mullins died in 1996. A son, H. Michael Mullins, died in 1998.
Survivors include a son, Chester Crail of Latonia; daughters, Debra Davis and Sheila Leeke, both of Independence; a sister, Bar-bara Wehrman of Covington; 14 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Helen Margaret Philippe, 83, of Bellevue, died Thursday at St. Charles Care Center, Covington. She was an office manager and a member of Sacred Heart Church Choir in Bellevue, the Bellevue Civic Association and Sacred Heart Christian Mothers Association.

Gabriel Mary Schandling, 78, of Latonia, died at 5 a.m. Friday at her home. She was a homemaker and a member of Holy Cross Church, Latonia. She was active with Holy Cross Senior Citizens and was a volunteer with Be Concerned, Covington. Her husband, Donald "Bud" G. Schandling, died in 1988.
Survivors include sons, Donald Schandling of West Chester, Ohio, and Gary Schandling of Villa Hills; a daughter, Paula Reed of Taylor Mill; brothers, Mike Gladney and Frank Gladney, both of St. Johns, Newfoundland; sisters, Nell Hanlon and Patsy McCallister, both of St. Johns, Newfoundland; 13 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

He was a service technician for Western Union Telegraph Co. and an Army veteran of the Vietnam War.
