Leroy 'Pete' Dougherty, chief of fire department
Leroy "Pete" Dougherty's interest in fighting fires began half a century ago when his brother-in-law convinced him to take a trip to Mentor to watch a house burn.
"That's when it caught his interest, and it went from there, " said Mr. Dougherty's wife, Loraine Dougherty of California.
Mr. Dougherty joined the Eastern Campbell Volunteer Fire Department and served it for more than 20 years -- 13 of them as chief.
"He enjoyed the people, " Mrs. Dougherty. The couple was married
47 years.
"He had some wonderful friends we kept in contact with, " she said. "He had an outgoing personality, and he always had a smile."
Mr. Dougherty died Sunday evening at Miami Haven Nursing Home in Cleves, Ohio. He was 70.
Born in Peach Grove, Mr. Dougherty served in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1955.
He worked as a maintenance mechanic at Kenner Toys, formerly headquartered in Cincinnati, for 19 years, retiring in the late 1980s.
Mr. Dougherty began volunteering with the Eastern Campbell Volunteer Fire Department in the late 1950s and served off and on through the 1980s.
He was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Church in California.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by daughters, Marilyn Carstens of Lexington and Teri Conn of Hooven, Ohio; sons, Doug Dougherty of Butler, Mark Dougherty and Marty Dougherty, both of California, and Mike Dougherty of Mentor; a brother, Ernest Dougherty of Wagner, S.C.; and 15 grandchildren.
A memorial Mass will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Sts. Peter and Paul Church in California.
Mr. Dougherty bequeathed his body to the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.

Helen Henderson Conner, 69, of Spartanburg, S.C., died Tuesday at Kindred Hospital, Greensboro, N.C. She was a retired textile employee and a member of Restoration Church, Spartanburg. A daughter, Wanda Bentley, preceded her in death.
Survivors include daughters, Linda Fuller of Saxon, S.C., Phyllis Hudson of Florence and Judy Hoyle of Charleston, S.C.; a son, Larry Blain of Lincolnton, N.C.; a brother, Henry Henderson of Spartanburg; eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Floyd's North Church Street Chapel, Spartanburg. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Heritage Memorial Gardens, Roebuck, S.C.
Audrey Marquette Cummins, 92, of Falmouth, died Monday at Grant Manor Nursing Home, Williamstown. She was a retired school cafeteria manager and a member of Short Creek Baptist Church, Falmouth. She helped organize the Pendleton County Homemakers and Pendleton County Senior Citizens.
Survivors include a son, Terry L. Cummins of New Albany, Ind.; a daughter, Ann Ammerman of Falmouth; seven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Short Creek Baptist Church. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 tonight at Peoples Funeral Home, Falmouth, and from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday at the church. Evelyn J. Dunn, 71, of Dry Ridge, died Sunday at her home. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Lawrence T. Dunn, preceded her in death.
Survivors include daughters, Valerie Moller of Dry Ridge and Linda Wilson of Cynthiana; a son, Estill T. Dunn of Dry Ridge; 12 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Williamstown. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in National Cemetery, Dayton, Ohio.
Lee Earhart Jr., 61, of Ludlow, died at 12:10 a.m. Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington. He was a diesel mechanic with Metro Transit Co., Cincinnati, and formerly with the Transit Authority of Northern Kentucky. He was a member of Amalgamated Transit Union Local No. 627 in Cincinnati and an Air Force veteran of the Vietnam War.
Survivors include his partner, James Johnson of Ludlow; his mother, Eleanor Jackson Phillips of Cincinnati; a brother, John W. Phillips of Latonia; and sisters, Pat Stalf of North Bend, Ohio, Jackie Ramsey of Tampa, Fla., and Kathy Nevels of Ross, Ohio.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Taylor Mill. Visitation is from 4 to 8 tonight and noon to 1 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Harold Fardo, 82, of Alexandria, died Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. He was a retired truck driver with Dolly Madison Cakes, Cincinnati, a member of Main Street Baptist Church in Alexandria and VFW Post No. 3205, Alexandria. He was a member of Aspen Grove Lodge No. 297 F&AM in Alexandria and a Navy veteran of World War II. His wife, Agnes Fardo, died in 1999.
Survivors include a daughter, Sharon Thomas of Alexandria; sons, Don Fardo of Peach Grove and Dick Fardo of Alexandria; a brother, Robert Fardo of California; a sister, Velma Pangburn of Peach Grove; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Annie Belle Freeman, 82, of Florence, died Monday at her residence. She was a homemaker. Her husband, John Henry Freeman, preceded her in death.
Survivors include daughters, Wanda Lanhorn of Burlington, Deborah Peterson and Anna Louise Deilich, both of Los Angeles and Anna May of Covington; sons, Melvin Martin, Roy Lee Martin and Jimmy Martin, all of Covington, and Johnny Cain of Detroit; stepdaughters, Debra Bass and Mary Cooper, both of Florence, and Hilda Carter of Cincinnati; stepsons, Bobby Freeman, Duke Freeman, Joe Freeman, Will Freeman and Ray-Ray Freeman, all of Florence; 14 grandchildren, 11 grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.

John William Grant Jr., son of John William Grant and Kathleen Murray of Newport, was stillborn Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital, Fort Thomas.
Other survivors include brothers, Austin Ziegelmeyer and Kedrick Newton, both of Newport; sisters, Alyssa Stamper and McKenna Murray, both of Newport; grandparents, Barbara and George William Murray of Alexandria and Cathy and Doug Grant of Newport; and great-grandmothers, Ila Murray of Edgewood and Laura Turner of Newport.

Marcella M. Gubser, 78, of Alexandria, died at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Carmel Manor, Fort Thomas. She was a retired cook with St. Mary School, Alexandria, and a member of St. Mary Church, Alexandria. She also worked at Sunshine Cleaners in Cold Spring. Her husband, Clarence Gubser, died in 1970.
Survivors include sons, Don Gubser of Melbourne and John Gubser of Alexandria; daughters, Sandra Gubser of Cold Spring, Joyce Hartig of Alexandria, Linda Heiert of Melbourne and Angela Wolfe of Cold Spring; sisters, Evelyn Crowley of Independence, Ruth E. Ralph A. Hallau Jr., 63, of Florence, died at 3:52 p.m. Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a retired machinist with Dana Corp. His wife, Barbara Bruck Hallau, died in 2003.
Survivors include sons, Darrin Hallau of Ludlow, Donnie Clark of Summerville, S.C., and Jimmy Clark of Greensboro, N.C.; and five grandchildren.

George Lay, 87, of Stanford, died Tuesday at McDowell Regional Hospital, Danville. He was an inspector with General Motors, a member of Erlanger Baptist Church and a World War II veteran. His wife, Pauline Lay, died in 1997.
Survivors include a daughter, Doris Berry of Stanford; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Anna Rose Pfeffer, 87, of Minerva, died Monday at her home. She was a retired cafeteria manager with Mason County Schools. Her husband, Charles Andrew Pfeffer, died in 1991.
Survivors include a son, Charles "Buddy" Pfeffer of Maysville; a daughter, Kathryn Kern of Brooksville; 10 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.

Paul Albert Schmitz, 75, of Alexandria, died Monday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. He was a retired sanitation district field supervisor and a member of American Legion Post No. 11 and St. Mary Church in Alexandria. He was a Coast Guard veteran and a veteran of World War II. His wife, Louise Baker Schmitz, died in 2002.
