Gary W. Whitis, taught school band at Conner
Gary W. Whitis loved teaching music to children.
He was band director at Conner Middle School in Hebron for about 20 years, and it was more a joy than a job.
"Music was always a big part of his life, and he was always in it for the kids, " said Mr. Whitis' wife, Julie Whitis.
Mr. Whitis, 49, of Burlington, died at his home Saturday of pancreatic cancer.
"He was a fighter, " said Mrs. Whitis. "He was told in October of 2002 that he probably wouldn't be alive in six months.
"But he battled and held on. He gave credit to his church -- Belleview Baptist Church -- for helping him. He was a good Christian."
Mr. Whitis was director of the Florence Community Band and belonged to the Kentucky Musician Education Association and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia fraternity. He also was a Shriner.
"He always made sure kids who couldn't afford musical instruments could play, " said his wife. "He would help them borrow horns or help work out arrangements with parents."
When not teaching music, Mr. Whitis enjoyed fishing and camping. He also loved to talk with people.
"He was really funny, " said Mrs. Whitis. "He was a jokester. He joked with everybody -- . Everybody was his friend. So many people knew him. His influence on the community has been huge."
