John M. Popp, 86, GE employee, violinist
John M. Popp of Fort Thomas was a man of many talents, and he used them to the benefit of his community.
Mr. Popp worked nearly 40 years for the General Electric Co., retiring in 1979 as a sales engineer with the Industrial Sales Division.
Along the way, he served as president of both the Fort Thomas Board of Adjustment and St. John's United Church of Christ in Newport.
And for years, Mr. Popp, a violinist, and his wife, Hazel E. (Hieber) Popp, a pianist, played music for delighted audiences at local events.
"He was a perfectionist, very careful about how he did things and a total gentleman, " said Mrs. Popp, his wife of 63 years.
"He was easygoing and pleasant. He got along well with people."
Mr. Popp died Friday at Highlands of Fort Thomas nursing home. He was 86.
Mr. Popp began setting an example early on. He was valedictorian of the Class of 1935 at Newport High School.
After graduating from the University of Cincinnati with a degree in electrical engineering, Mr. Popp was hired by General Electric in 1940.
He trained in Erie, Pa., and Pittsfield, Mass., and worked six years in Schenectady, N.Y., before returning to Cincinnati.
Mr. Popp served 25 years on the Fort Thomas Board of Adjustment.
He also served at St. John's as chairman of both the Board of Deacons and Deaconesses and the Board of Christian Enlistment. Mr. Popp became president of the church in 1981.
Mr. Popp was a member of the Tau Beta Pi honorary engineering fraternity, the Eta Kappa Nu honorary electrical engineering fraternity and the Highland Country Club in Fort Thomas -- where he enjoyed being the handicapper for a couples' golf league.
He was a Kentucky Colonel and an avid traveler who visited 45 states and many countries.
Mr. Popp's principal hobby, though, was playing the violin. He was a member of several orchestras, including the Schenectady Symphony Orchestra when he lived in that city.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Popp is survived by a daughter, Diane E. Lieser of Excelsior, Minn.; a son, Dr. Martin B. Popp of Cincinnati; a sister, Helen Berkemeyer of Southgate; and five grandchildren.
