Kevin Goemmer, 48, horse race announcer

Kevin Goemmer was one of the tri-state's best-known horse racing callers.

As recently as last week, the Independence resident was announcing races at Turfway Park in Florence. Tuesday, he died of an apparent heart attack at the age of 48.

"We're obviously very saddened by his death, " said Turfway President Bob Elliston. "Kevin filled in with us when Mike Battaglia was on some national assignments.

"I've known Kevin for many years, and Kevin truly had in his heart a great passion for horse racing. His first love was to call the races, and we were glad that he came back and called with us on occasion.

"I'm going to very much miss Kevin's face and talents around here, and more than that, I think racing will have lost one of its most ardent, unflinching fans and for that we should all be sad."

John Engelhardt, publicity director of River Downs in Cincinnati and a long time friend of Mr. Goemmer, said he would be remembered for his patented race calls.

"A plodder would 'see 'em all, '" he said. "A pacesetter was always 'showing his heels' to the field."

Mr. Goemmer died at University Hospital in Cincinnati after suffering what is believed to be a heart attack while he was driving home from Charlson Broadcast Technologies in Erlanger, where he was director of sales and marketing.

He started working as an announcer in 1980 at River Downs, where he also served as director of publicity and assistant general manager until 1995, when he left to call races at Arlington Park, Hawthorne and Sportsman's Park, all in Chicago.

Mr. Goemmer returned to Kentucky in 2000 to take the position at Charlson, which provides graphics for in-house and simulcast products at race tracks.

He continued to fill in as an announcer, however.

"He just loved to announce the horse racing, and he's always been a part of it, " said a son, Jason Goemmer.

Mr. Goemmer was a native of Louisville and got his start in horse racing when his father worked at the old Louisville Downs harness track.

He worked part-time as a stable hand at age 13, where he met WAKY disc jockey and horse owner Dude Walker. That led to odd jobs at the station and sparked his interest in announcing.

His first radio broadcast came while filling in for Louisville Downs announcer Mel Smith, who became ill.

"They threw me upstairs to sink or swim, " Mr. Goemmer recalled in a 1995 interview. "That's how I got started announcing. ... I said, 'Boy, this is great. I want to do this for a living.'"

Mr. Goemmer is survived by his wife of 28 years, Deborah Goemmer, and a second son, Justin.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday and Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Taylor Mill. Visitation will be at the funeral home from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday. Memorials are suggested to the Kevin Goemmer Memorial Fund and may be made at any branch of Fifth Third Bank.
