Michael Brindley, decorated Air Force veteran
Michael Wheeler Brindley was a highly-decorated U.S. Air Force pilot who flew 220 missions in Vietnam, but you wouldn't know it by talking with the unassuming family man.
"He was unpretentious, " said Mr. Brindley's wife of 22 years, Joyce Juett Brindley. "He won the Silver Star, the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal. He kept them in a drawer. He didn't bring attention to them."
Mr. Brindley, 63, of Carrollton, died Monday at St. Joseph Hospital in Lexington.
After serving in the Air Force, Mr. Brindley spent 27 years as a pilot for TWA Airlines. Following retirement from TWA, he turned to farming, raising tobacco, cattle and hay.
Mr. Brindley graduated from Carrollton High School in 1958 and from the University of Kentucky in 1963. He was a member of Kappa Alpha fraternity and remained a devoted fan of University of Kentucky athletics all his life.
He was a member of the Moose Lodge, the American Legion, St. Peter's Lutheran Church and served on the Carroll County soil conservation board.
Other survivors include a son, Edward Bradford Billingsley of Las Vegas; a daughter, Brittany Walls of Carrollton; a brother, Norman Kevin Brindley of Carrollton, and a sister, Patricia Roeder of Carrollton.
Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Carrollton.
Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at Graham-Dunn Funeral Home in Carrollton.
Burial will be in IOOF cemetery in Carrollton.

Lorraine Lillian Calme, 89, of Bellevue, died Monday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Anthony Seniors Club, Pioneer Mothers Club, the St. Anthony Altar Society and Bellevue Veterans Club Seniors. Her husband, Emil "Skeets" Calme, and a son, Jerry Calme, both preceded her in death.
Survivors include daughters, Patty Burkart of Fort Thomas and Lynn Krohmer of Bellevue; sons, Ed Calme of Tyler, Texas, and Tom Calme of Bellevue; 13 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Divine Mercy Church, Bellevue. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at A.C. Dobbling and Son Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Fort Thomas. Memorials are suggested to New Hope Family Life Center, P.O. Box 6115, Florence, Ky. 41042; or the charity of the donor's choice.
Nicholas C. Katon, 77, of Newport, died Sunday at Good Samaritan Hospital, Cincinnati. He was a retired musician.
Survivors include daughters, Theresa A. Katon and Kathleen M. Downing, both of Cincinnati, and Karen Katon of Columbus, Ohio; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Fares J. Radel Funeral Home, Newport. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Friday. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery, Wilder. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.
Ronald D. Keller, 57, of Walton, died Tuesday at his home. He was a woodworker with Independence Lumber Co., formerly Crescent Paper Tube Co., and a member of Walton Christian Church and Walton-Verona Masonic Lodge No. 719.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara Groger Keller; a daughter, Ashley Keller Born; a son, Kristen Keller of Cold Spring; a sister, Brenda Haner of Crown City, Ohio; and a grandson.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Friday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Walton. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in New Bethel Cemetery, Verona. Memorials are suggested to St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, 401 E. 20th St., Covington, Ky. 41014.
Frances A. Lund, 81, of Erlanger, died at 6:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington. She was a teacher in Kansas. Her husband, Harold O. Lund, died in 1990.
Survivors include a son, Edward Lund of Topeka; daughters, Elaine Halenkamp of Erlanger, Evelyn Haungs of Glastonbury, Conn., Elizabeth Corber of Topeka and Esther Stamler of Euluss, Texas; a sister, Metta Striceck of Ellsworth, Kan.; nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Topeka Cemetery. Don Catchen and Son Funeral Home, Elsmere, is handling arrangements.
Elgen Stanton "Bud" Morgan, 67, of Ludlow, died at 6:55 p.m. Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington. He was a retired machinist with Duro Bag Co.
Survivors include daughters, Pam Bertram of Covington, Cynthia Morgan of Perryville, Md., and Tonya Cornett of Danville; a son, Jeff Morgan of Independence; a sister, Nancy Gemmer of Latonia; brothers, Avery Morgan of Independence and Wilburn Morgan of Brownsville, Texas; 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Ludlow. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate. Gordon A. Porter, 65, of Alexandria, died at 9:34 a.m. Monday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. He was a marketing director with Sealtron, Cincinnati.
Survivors include his wife, Diana R. Porter; sons, Alan N. Porter and Michael G. Porter, both of Alexandria, Daniel E. Porter of Fairview, Tenn.; his stepmother, Laura Porter of Salem, Ore.; a sister, Gayle Maeder of Salem; a brother, Robert E. Porter of Mission Viejo, Calif.; and two grandchildren.
Services will be at 8 p.m. Thursday at Alexandria Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Loma Vista Memorial Park, Fullerton, Calif.
Vernon "Bud" Skirvin, 88, of Ghent, died Monday at King's Daughters Hospital in Madison, Ind. He was a retired farmer, a member of Mount Hermon Baptist Church, and an Army veteran of World War II. His wife, Myrtle Skirvin, died in 1988. A daughter, Glenetta Skirvin Westover, also preceded her in death.
Survivors include daughters, Lena Townsend of LaGrange, Rita Fay Townsend of Bedford, Bonnie Ruth Wade of Vevay, Ind., and Ida Katherine Price of Tell City, Ind.; sons, William C. Skirvin and David C. Skirvin, both of Worthville; 16 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Linda Sue Southwick, 51, of Florence, died at 3 a.m. Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include sons, Steve Southwick of Bellevue, Clinton Southwick of Fort Wright and Dan Southwick of Covington; a daughter, Shawna Southwick Fox of Cincinnati.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at New Beginning Evangelical Presbyterian Church, Erlanger. Visitation will begin there at 10 a.m. Friday.
