Edward Lalley, furniture store owner, raced horses
Edward Vernon Lalley owned a furniture store, but what he really wanted to own was a farm full of thoroughbred race horses.
"He loved race horses, " said Mr. Lalley's wife, Carolyn Lalley of Florence. "He owned a few, but his dream was to have a thoroughbred farm. He was never able to do that, but he had a lot of fun with horse racing as a hobby."
Mr. Lalley, 71, of Florence, died Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South in Edgewood.
He worked for Modern Furniture in Covington for several years and then started his own company, Furniture and Carpets Unlimited, in Florence.
Mr. Lalley served in the Air Force during the Korean War and later was a member of the executive board of American Legion Post No. 4 in Florence. He also was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He owned several thoroughbred horses that raced at Turfway Park and River Downs. His best horse was Count North, which won several races in the 1980s.
Mr. Lalley's great-grandfather came to America from Ireland, and Mr. Lalley enjoyed his Irish heritage.
"He was a fun-loving Irishman, " said his wife of 39 years. "He really enjoyed life."
Other survivors include two sons, Kevin Dennis Lalley of Erlanger and Kenneth M. Lalley of Union; and four grandchildren.
Services will be at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at Stith Funeral Home in Florence. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Forest Lawn cemetery in Erlanger.

Michael Patrick Ahern, 48, of Union, died Thursday at his home. He was director of retail distribution for the Kroger Co.
Survivors include his wife, Cindy Ahern; sons, Andy Ahern and Corey Ahern, both at home; his mother, Lorraine Ahern of Highlands Ranch, Calif.; sisters, Mary Sweeney of Littleton, Colo., Sue Deline of Leucadia, Calif., and Patty Ahern of Solana Beach, Calif.; and a brother, Terry Ahern of Novato, Calif.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Timothy Church, Union. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Burlington. Berlie Andi, 80, of Walton, died at 4:45 a.m. Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington. She was a homemaker. There are no immediate survivors.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. C&C; Mortuary, Covington, is handling arrangements.
Edward Bittlinger, 77, of Fort Wright, died Friday at his home. He was a retired supervisor with the U.S. Postal Service and an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II.
Survivors include his wife, Wynne Bittlinger; daughters, Milissa Flick of Florence, Gretchen Bloemer of Fort Mitchell, Tina Graessle of Edgewood and Emily Freihofer of Hebron; a son, Eric Bittlinger of Lakeside Park; a brother, Fred Bittlinger of Villa Hills; and 11 grandchildren.

James Albert Cordray, 46, of Cynthiana, died Friday at Harrison Memorial Hospital, Cynthiana. He was a former employee of Grede Perm Cast in Cynthiana, a machinist with L-3 Communications in Lexington, and a tee-ball and softball coach.
Survivors include his wife, Michele Stakelin Cordray; a daughter, Allison Paige Cordray of Cynthiana; a brother, Michael W. Cordray; and sisters, Patricia Faulkner of Georgetown and Barbara Clough of Lexington.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Ware Funeral Home, Cynthiana. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Battle Grove Cemetery, Cynthiana. Lewis Henry Ford, 57, of Covington, died Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington. He was a self-employed painter.
Survivors include his wife, Sharon Ford; daughters, Sheila Joan Conner and Sandra Louise Kordenbrock, both of Park Hills, and Rhonda Patterson of Surgoinsville, Tenn.; a son, Timothy Ford of Surgoinsville; stepsons, Brian Haste of Edgewood and Steven Haste of Hamilton, Ohio; a stepdaughter, Sherri Smith of Dry Ridge; his father, John H. Ford of Lafollette, Tenn.; sisters, Carol Hiatt of Florence and Margie Wilson of Bellvue, Ohio; and brothers, Terry Ford of Sacramento, Calif., Danny Ford of Houston and Joey Ford of Cincinnati.

McKinley Gross, 71, of Cincinnati, formerly of Newport, died at 9 p.m. Friday at Hospice of Cincinnati. He was a bookbinder with Ohio Valley Litho Color and a member of the board of trustees of the Taylor Creek Condo Homeowners Association, Cincinnati. A son, Steven McKinley Gross, preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife, Alma Sebastian Gross; a son, Daryl Gross of Cincinnati; a daughter, Teresa Reynolds of Cincinnati; brothers, Bill Gross of Bellevue and Earl Gross of Newport; sisters, Mary Turner of Newport and Patsy Bowin of Dry Ridge; four grandsons and a great-grandchild.

Lee B. Kasson Jr., 80, of Cincinnati, formerly of Fort Thomas, died Sunday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. He was an attorney and a World War II veteran.
Survivors include a brother, Don Kasson of Cincinnati, and a sister, Barbara Lencke of Atlanta.

Eliza "Ellie" Michael, 46, of Bromley, died Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was disabled.
Survivors include daughters, Shannon Michael, Michele Michael and Covina Michael, all of Bromley; her father, Ralph Michael Sr. of Bromley; brothers, Ricky Blankenship and Terry Michael, both of Columbus, Ohio; half-brothers, Ralph Michael Jr. and Paul Michael, both of Columbus, and William Michael of Williamstown; and a sister, Mae Michael of Bromley.

Christopher Stephen Northcutt, 17, of Fort Wright, died at 10:50 a.m. Friday at his home. He was a farmer and a member of Anchor Church, Erlanger.

Charles Oldensmith, 90, of Fort Thomas, died at 2:05 p.m. Friday at St. Charles Care Center, Covington. He was a retired tool and die maker with Ford Motor Co., a member of St. Thomas Church in Fort Thomas and the Newport Elks. His first wife, Esther Meier Oldensmith, died in 1990.
Survivors include his wife, Patricia Oldensmith of Covington; daughters, Ann Brown and Beth Zembrodt, both of Cincinnati; a son, Tom Oldensmith of Pompano, Fla.; five grandchildren and a great-granddaughter.

Linda Jean Parker, 54, of Union, died Friday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. She was disabled, and was a member of Union Baptist Church.

Howard E. Ping, 79, of Vevay, Ind., formerly of Union, died Friday at Swiss Villa Living Center, Vevay. He was an assembly line worker with General Motors and an Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include sons, Peff Ping of Walton and Jerry Ping of Union; a brother, Ed Ping of Tyler, Texas; and four grandchildren.

Gwendolyn Carter Rife, 67, of Florence, died Thursday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. She was a desk clerk with Howard Johnson's Motel, Cincinnati, a member of the Toastmistress Speech Club and the choir at Woodspoint Nursing Home, Florence.
Survivors include daughters, Rhonda Wuest of Florence and Rene L. Rife of Lexington; a son, Robb C. Rife of Lexington; and two grandchildren.

Mary Tracy Sullivan, 44, of Independence, died at 3:47 p.m. Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was a social worker with the Northern Kentucky Area Development District.
