Edward Reynolds, worked hard throughout his life
Edward Joseph Reynolds liked to stay busy.
The Crestview Hills resident, who died Sunday at age 68, was raised on a tobacco farm in Falmouth. When he was 5, he started getting up early to milk the cows and do other farm chores, said his daughter, Maria Majella Sparks of Edgewood.
That work ethic stayed with him throughout his life. He put himself through college working three jobs, graduating from Villa Madonna College -- now Thomas More College -- in 1958 and then obtaining a banking degree from the University of Wisconsin.
He worked as a bank executive for 28 years for the Central Trust Bank in Ohio, and retired from the First National Bank of Covington in 1984.
On weekends, he would cook meals for his wife to heat up during the week. He would also cook a big breakfast every Sunday after church for the family.
"He's really created a legacy for us to carry on in terms of caring for our own families, " said his son, Gerard Reynolds of Spencerport, N.Y.
Mr. Reynolds was a minister of praise at Blessed Sacrament Church, Fort Mitchell. He also served on numerous charitable boards, including for the United Way and Crimestoppers of Greater Cincinnati.
He loved to dance, especially the cha-cha and jitterbug. He loved to play cards, especially euchre, loved to tell stories, make people laugh and have a good time.
"We were so blessed to have him here on earth, " Sparks said. "He was my hero. He was the epitome of a good man."
He often went out of his way to put others first, his son said.
Although his wife didn't especially care for flowers, Mr. Reynolds bought some from a local flower vendor every Friday, because he knew the vendor needed the money.
He made seven trips to Hawaii with his wife, and on one of them, they noticed a homeless man walking by the ocean. Mr. Reynolds fixed him a peanut butter sandwich, gave him some money and cigarettes.
That was the highlight of the trip, said his widow, Marilyn Clare Roth Reynolds.
