Jack Ginn, received Purple Heart in Korea
Jack Edward Ginn died Monday, a day before Veterans Day, but he needed no calendar to remind him of his Army service half a century ago in Korea.
The shrapnel he carried in his body took care of that every day.
"He suffered a bone wound to his left leg, and that would sometimes blister up to the surface, even late in his life, " said his wife, Charlene Ginn. "They'd put him on medicine for it and get it cleared up, then maybe three to four months later, it would happen again."
Mr. Ginn's leg was so badly mangled in shelling that doctors at first wanted to amputate the limb.
But he resisted and managed to deal with the injury throughout his life.
He received the Purple Heart and other medals for his service in Korea.
Mr. Ginn, of Florence, was 74.
He grew up in Covington and dropped out of Holmes High School to join the Army with his father, Estille A. Ginn.
Mrs. Ginn, who wed her husband in 1997, wasn't sure if the two served together in Korea.
After military service, Mr. Ginn worked 40 years for the R.A. Jones Co. in Crescent Springs, setting up and servicing manufacturing machinery the company sold.
After retiring, he did some woodworking, but mostly played golf and fished.
Mr. Ginn was a trustee and member of Ralph Fulton VFW Post No. 6423 in Elsmere, and a member of Florence American Legion and Disabled American Veterans.
