Bernard Meier, dedicated volunteer
Bernard G. Meier was a believer in the St. Vincent de Paul Society, a Catholic organization that helps the needy in a variety of ways.
He volunteered for it in Northern Kentucky for more than 40 years, interviewing people who were seeking assistance, distributing holiday food baskets, visiting nursing home residents and hospital patients.
One Thanksgiving, he got a call about a family who had nothing to eat.
"He took the food off our table and took it to them, " said his wife, Lois Williams Meier. "He was really devoted to the St. Vincent de Paul Society."
Mr. Meier, 77, of Taylor Mill, died at 6 p.m. Tuesday at his home.
His commitment to helping others was rooted in his strong Catholic faith, said Mrs. Williams.
"It was the way his parents brought him up, " she said. "He remained an altar boy even after we got married. He was just very faithful to his religion and all it meant."
Mr. Meier only went through the eighth grade at St. Anthony School in Forest Hills (now Taylor Mill), but used his G.I. bill benefits from Army service in World War II to train as a lens grinder. He worked in that trade 32 years for Cincinnati Optical.
"He was a good provider, a good husband and the greatest daddy who ever lived, " said Mrs. Williams. "He was a very, very, very good person."
