Donald Ring, veteran, retired dam lockman
No plane in the 84th Fighter Squadron of the U.S. Army Air Corps left the ground without being in tiptop shape. Not if Donald E. Ring had anything to say about it.
As an assistant crew chief serving in World War II, he was adamant about maintaining aircraft to keep his comrades safe.
Mr. King raised his family, nurtured his faith and tended to the Ohio River as a lockman with that same care, said his son, Frank Ring, of Mays-ville.
"He made everything right on his airplane before he took off. My dad never half-did anything, " Frank Ring said.
Mr. Ring, 83, of Maysville, died Thursday at Meadowview Regional Medical Center in Maysville.
He was the first full-time employee at the Meldahl Dam and a member of St. Patrick Church in Maysville.
Other than the time he was away during the war, Mr. Ring spent his whole life living on or near Bull Creek in Maysville.
"He was born and raised and died probably all within a couple miles of each other. It was home. That's where his friends were at, that's where his family was at, " Frank Ring said.
Mr. Ring raised his two children with loving discipline.
"He taught us right from wrong, and I never hold a minute of it against him, " his son said.
Mr. Ring's favorite pastime was playing the fiddle -- a hobby that once drew a most unusual audience. On a tour of the troops in World War II, Great Britain's King George VI and his wife stopped to watch Mr. Ring and his makeshift bluegrass band perform. It's a memory Mr. Ring cherished.
Back home, he and his wife, Anna Theresa Cropper Ring, of Maysville, made a perfect musical pair.
"For years around here, on the weekends, him and mom would go to square dances. Mom never could play and Dad never could dance, and Dad was always up on stage a-playing, " Frank Ring said.
His faith sustained him throughout his life. In his last years, Mr. Ring and his wife would pray the rosary together every night.
When his health prevented him from attending church, he watched Mass on television and took Holy Communion brought to his home by a volunteer.
Surviving in addition to his wife and son are a daughter, Libby Ritchie of Elizaville; a sister, Evelyn Storer of Peebles, Ohio; and one granddaughter.
