Edward Hassert, boxer, truck driver, negotiator
Edward John Hassert drove a tractor-trailer, boxed professionally, negotiated for the Teamsters and rebuilt a home by hand after it burned down.
"He was born in an era when life was tough, and men were hard-nosed and resolute, " said a grandson, Dan Hassert of Covington. "You should have heard his stories."
Mr. Hassert grew up in Cincinnati fighting for the best corner on which to sell newspapers. He was a Golden Gloves champ with the Catholic Youth Organization, and later he fought professionally on undercards in small towns.
"Sometimes the pay would only be $2 a round, and sometimes he was asked to fight twice in a night when another boxer didn't show up, " his grandson said. "No fancy stuff, either. He lifted weights made from elevator pulleys.
"He used to tell me about operating a pool hall when he was a teen-ager, about dodging MPs in World War II, about driving his rig through ice storms in the days before interstates, about getting those midnight calls from Chicago from the union bosses, and about carrying his wife out of a burning house."
Mr. Hassert, 89, of Latonia, died at 3:10 a.m. Tuesday at Rosedale Manor in Latonia. He had driven a truck for the Kroger Co. in Cincinnati for 27 years and was married
to Virginia Mary Schlief for 69 years.
"We were planning a big party for their 70th in June, " Dan Hassert said. "That's an incredible number of years, especially these days. You just can't define a love like that."
The relationship had a bold start.
Then-Miss Schlief worked in a restaurant and was horrified one day when the soft drink delivery man she knew only by sight whirled her around and gave her a kiss, in front of the whole place.
"She still blushes telling the story, and when she asked him just the other day if he remembered it, he just grinned, " Dan Hassert said.
Mr. Hassert was a member of Holy Cross Church in Latonia and Teamsters Local No. 100. He was a Kentucky Colonel and a Navy veteran of World War II. A daughter, Barbara Ann Knobloch, died in 1995.
