Lawrence Moorhead, Pendleton bank official
Lawrence "Shorty" Moorhead loved to tell stories and jokes. In fact, he was even telling them as nurses prepared him for massive heart surgery two weeks ago.
The Bracken County resident, who died Thursday at age 68, loved talking to people and enjoyed helping them, said his widow, Patty Ann Moorhead.
After they were married
47 years ago, Mr. Moorhead became a member of the church his wife grew up in, the Brooksville Christian Church.
He would go on to serve as an elder, deacon, chairman of the board and Sunday school teacher there.
Mr. Moorhead worked most of his life as a farmer. About 12 years ago, he became a founding director of the United Kentucky Bank of Pendleton County. Working with the bank became one of his greatest pleasures, his wife said.
He also served for five years as a Bracken County magistrate.
About 10 years ago, he suffered a stroke, and his right side was affected. He had to give up farming, but he worked so hard at rehabilitation that many people weren't aware of his affliction, his wife said.
Before his stroke, he was an avid quail and pheasant hunter. He looked forward to going deer hunting with his grandchildren when he saw his doctor on Nov. 7, complaining of pressure in his chest.
The doctor found several blocked arteries, and had him flown to Central Baptist Hospital in Lexington for immediate surgery.
It appeared he would again recover from a major illness, when he was talking and starting to regain his appetite a few days after the surgery.
But on Nov. 13, he had a massive stroke and never recovered.
"To us, he died last Thursday, " his wife said.
